rmaynard 15,964 #1 Posted May 14, 2010 Just rebuilt (if you can call it that) my Carter carb off of a K241AS. When I say "if you can call it that", I am referring to the very limited Kohler rebuild kit that includes a gasket that goes nowhere, a bowl gasket, float valve and seat. I removed and cleaned the idle fuel adjustment, main fuel needle and jet. I soaked and cleaned the carb body. Reassembled, set the needle valves to initial book settings, and started it up. It started right away after the bowl filled. However, there was a lot of popping and misfiring. Before I did anything else, I cleaned and regapped the points to .020", cleaned and set the plug to .025". I restarted and set the speed to fast and adjusted the main needle valve until the engine ran fairly smooth. Then I returned to idle and it quit. There does not seem to be difference wherever I set the idle needle valve. I removed the carb, re-cleaned everything, and check the needle valves, reassembled and it does the same thing. I still get popping and misfiring at high speed, and no idle. So I took the carb off my B-100 K241S. Without changing anything, I installed it on the K241AS and it runs fine. What am I doing wrong with the other carb, or where should I look next as far as a clogged port or something? Help. Thanks guys. I know someone will have the answer. piecrazy4 0 #2 Posted May 14, 2010 Sounds like the idle passage could be plugged or you could have a loose throttle shaft making it loose vacuum. Causing it to not get fuel? Check & double check. That's been done. I am going back to the old float valve and seat. I did not try to run the engine before installing a new valve and seat. rmaynard 15,964 #6 Posted May 15, 2010 FIXED! Thanks to T-Mo and his link to carburetor rebuild, (Carburetor 101), I discovered that the large needle valve was clogged INSIDE. The little holes were open, but between the top holes and the bottom holes, the passage was blocked. I soaked in 99% alcohol, and sucked on the tube until air passed. Sounds crude, but it worked.
