figo40 0 #1 Posted May 12, 2010 Good Morning all, I have a 633 with a k141 and Ferry Morris recoil starter. I recently repainted and reassembled everything. My starter worked fine for a while then started slipping. I shimmed out the mounting flange and it worked for a little while, now it is slipping again. Has anyone had this happen before? Can I "sharpen" the friction shoes? Anyone have a fix for this? Thanks, Frank
piecrazy4 0 #2 Posted May 12, 2010 Sometimes if you oil the recoil unit it can make it slip.
TT-(Moderator) 1,162 #3 Posted May 12, 2010 Ummmmmm...... that would (possibly) be a Fairbanks-Morse recoil. Does it have the smooth or toothed flywheel cup?
figo40 0 #4 Posted May 13, 2010 Thanks for the replies, It is a Fairbanks Morris and I guess it is the smooth cup allthough there seems to be some slight indents but I would not call them teeth.
DMK855 15 #5 Posted May 13, 2010 I had one doing the same thing. The fiber "friction" washers were worn and not holding the center piece and pushing the shoes out. I had to make my own as I could not find them any where!! "Sorry for the lack of tech. names for the parts!!!"
figo40 0 #6 Posted May 13, 2010 Thank's I'll check the washers, hopefully that's all it is. Frank
figo40 0 #7 Posted May 14, 2010 Thanks for all the help, I have figured out what I did wrong, I was shimming out the recoil with washers instead of of shimming out the pully, as soon as I reversed the proceedure it pulls fine and starts easily! Frank
