Look what followed me home

I have driven past this tractor at least once a week for the last 6 years. I didn't have a clue what it was, since it was always covered with a silver tarp. :D The owner was never home. I knew it was a Wheel Horse because of the shape of the hood, :USA: and the lift lever had popped through the tarp. I figured it was a B or C series something.

This past Wednesday, I past it again, and for the first time in six years, the owner was out mowing his grass (with a push mower).

I stopped. Asked if I could see the Horse. He said yes. I asked if it was for sale. He said yes. I said how much. He said make me an offer. I said $100. He said no. We compromised at $150.00

At this time his wife walked up and said, "if you are going to take the tractor, you've got to take the SNOW BLOWER too". I said how much. The owner started to say something and his wife said FREE.

Here is what I got:

61d2a723.jpg

It's a 1979 C-101 8 Speed with a deck and a snow blower.

Here's the bad news:

The tires are shot

The right tie-rod is broken

The sheet metal is bent and some rust-through

The wiring is burned

The transmission has oil coming out of every seal.

The engine blower housing is rusted through at the bottom and sides

The steering wheel is shot

The deck has a lot of rust-through

The snow blowers has rust-through and looks pretty tired

Here's the good news:

The dash panel is restorable

Okay, I was only looking for an engine to go on my Johnny Cash tractor.

Here's the news on the engine:

It's a K241AS

It turned easily by hand

There is no visible signs of oil leaks or head gasket leaks

Here's the better news

The starter motor works

Compression is 92

I've got spark :wh:

I did a simple wire-around to see if it would start and...

With starter fluid it runs. The muffler is good. There are no knocks and no smoke. Of course it's only running on starter fluid.

Can't keep it running though. Diagnosed that as a bad fuel pump. Got nothing coming out when I turn over the engine. Took it apart and found lots-o-crap on the inside.

But the good news is that I got a decent 10HP engine for $150.00.

Now I need to find a good fuel pump, and a good engine blower housing.

Let's see, a good engine for $150., and lots of spare parts for use elsewhere, or to recoup some of the investment, sounds good to me! :D

Not if my loving wife has anything to do with. She is at work and is not even aware that this one followed me home. :D

Just kidding, of course... :USA:

I would rig up a fuel tank mounted higher than the carburetor and bypass the fuel pump... Maybe strap it to the hood? Then, you could drive it around and check out the transmission and everything else... Looks like a good parts donor! :D

Bob, I just went thru kinda the same thing with an electro 12 that had sat for a long time. Fuel pump wouldn't pump til I got all the air out of the (new) gas line and of course I had to take the carb apart and clean it up.

Took this one apart to find that it had water sitting in it for years. Aluminum is eaten away at the valve seats and it cannot be repaired.

Guess I am in the market for a new or good used one.
