hudog 0 #1 Posted May 8, 2010 What are the pros and cons of rear vs side discharge decks? I know a rear discharge allows you to mow closer to fixed objects, but the side discharge would be required for bagger attachments. Any difference in cut quality? Seems like the side discharge would cut better than a rear, if the clippings have a smaller opening to exit. I'm also guessing there were more side discharge decks sold than rear decks. Would appreciate hearing other folks input and observations. thanks, hudog
Michael Bullington 5 #2 Posted May 8, 2010 ive been mowing lately with my 32" Rear discharge (867)(RM324) because my JD 38" side discharge broke down...I have to say my yard is looking beautiful this is strange but it seems i have less clippings?? anyway it takes a whole lot longer but ive become a huge fan of the rear discharge.! :D
Save Old Iron 1,568 #3 Posted May 8, 2010 there is a very good response on this link http://www.wheelhorseforum.com/index.php?...16&hl=discharge
Gene_S 93 #4 Posted May 8, 2010 I really like the rear discharge on my 702... It does a great job cutting and your not cutting your clippings up over and over... Cons... I hate how it makes the inside of the rear tires look...
gwgdog66 23 #5 Posted May 9, 2010 I really like the 42 RD deck I just put on mine. The advantage I see right away is more even distribution of clippings, and I don't have dust blown all over me when I make turns into the wind. If you have a pull behind sweeper, you can pick up the clippings as you mow with a RD deck.
rickv1957 73 #6 Posted May 9, 2010 I have used both style decks and they both cut great when in good shape!,Rick
MikesRJ 558 #7 Posted May 9, 2010 I switched from a 42" SD to a 42" RD a while back (on my '73 10-8) due to a couple of clearance issues around my property. The discharge chute extension was too long to clear a few areas, and mowing close on only one side was a pain. The only thing I don't like about the RD deck is that the insides of the rear wheels get a lot of dirt and clippings on them, and need to be cleaned now and then. Small problem, yes, but a very minor annoyance as well. I was thinking of fabricating a discharge baffle to direct the expulsion downward at the discharge, but have done nothing more than just think about it. frankiefiredog 1 #8 Posted May 10, 2010 I figure I'd chime in on this one since I have experience with both. I had a 42" SD on a B-80 and currently have a 42" RD on my dad's old C-120. I absolutely prefer the RD deck. Easily takes down taller grass. Easier through damp grass (we've all done it! SD's just clog up!). No chute to have clearence issues. I think the underside of the deck stays cleaner on a RD. It leaves my lawn looking sharp. If I need too, I just pull the trust sweeper behind to pick up the clippings. Either deck is easy to work on. Good times! You just have to love the ability and choice you get with a I know I do!
