Correct for a 701?

Recommended Posts

For the most part this tractor is all original however, I had a few things I'm not sure about. The first question is about the ignition switch. Did the 701 come with a switch as I was told it should have been a push button start? Second is the clutch pedal return spring. This tractor has one at the tranny (which looks original) and one (broken) near the pedal. The broken spring at the pedal looks added but not sure.

I believe your dash is a replacement one but the original I think had a spot for a Cole-Hersee Starter switch. See below from EBAY listing:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Foot-Hand-O...sQ5fAccessories

These switches are available from a lot of sources but are just like the 1960's originals.

The Wheel Horse 1054 tractors from 1964 and 1965 had them on them also.

The operated the starter/ generator when the key or on/off switch was turned on.

The 701 had a key switch to turn the ign. on and off, and a small starter button next to it,( they didn't use the switch Lane ranger referenced till 62) to crank the engine, yes your dash is homemade but it the only round hood that does have the plastic dash, we have a vendor here that makes nice repo ones.

My all original 701 has the original plastic dash with the key for on and off and the push button to start. Also has the spring by the transmission only, no spring up by the pedal. Hope this helps!

MJ, what is the broken spring actually attached to? My guess - and it is only that - is that a PO might have added it to give the clutch more "grab" by hooking what is now the broken off end to the hook thingie that is sticking out from the side of the frame just aft of the pedal. The paint on the broken spring looks of the same color/patina as the parts around it, so I suppose it might have been factory. I'll be interested to see what the pros here have to offer.

Since I know nothing about 701's, did the clutch and brake both operate from the same pedal? The first spring you reference looks like a brake return spring. :D

rj35hunter... got any pics? :D I'd be very interested....as this is what mine looks like right now. Original two prong key switch, and I'm pretty sure that's the original starter button, but the choke is a replacment, and well... the poor throttle was MIA. :USA:

and I have that same spring at the clutch pedal... see it here. I don't think it's supposed to be there though.

Re: 701 Dash

The sequence should be, (as you look at the dash, left to right);

Choke (#4233), Throttle (#4232), Starter (#1746) and Key Switch (#1747).

When the Wheel Horse factory found the dash was weak and cracking after a few months, the positions of the Choke & Throttle and Switch & Starter were interchanged to the above so the holes with more stress were closer to the outside of the dash (Instrument Panel #3974). It would be very rare to find an original instrument panel today that hasn't failed (after 40-50 years, plastic becomes very brittle). The 701 schematics, figure 3, also show the newer locations.

The replacement 701 Panel that we make has the correct size holes (of the four holes: two are of each of two slightly different ID diameters), and the entire area behind the holes is reinforced 1/10" thicker, the epoxy we use is stronger than the original, but it looks exactly like the original from the front.

Thanks a lot guys for all the info, its really helpful. :D I will check out the vendor section for parts once I get a list up. I want to get it mechanically sound and work it some before I break it down for a restoration.

Someone made a really nice aluminum backing plate to go behind the dash panel on my 701 to reinforce it. Doug
