Redbird 1 #1 Posted May 4, 2010 Two of David's horses are down (at least for a little while) Seems the wild animals are so at ease here that they have their kids anywhere. In this case the 2 horses (both of which run) are doing double duty. They are taking a break from work to play mama. The birds are so comfortable with all the goings on here that they've decided that the horses would make good nesting sites, even though we are constantly walking by and have mowers going and such. They are even nesting on a set of metal shelves right next to the door to the shop! Below are a few pics of the two horses the nests are Robin
jpmcleod 4 #2 Posted May 4, 2010 Guess they will be sitting a while. It's nice that you care enough to give the little birddies a chance. I think I better park one of mine inside the barn. I can't let both mowers sit while the birds hatch.

rmaynard 16,297 #4 Posted May 4, 2010 I never had birds, but the squirrels ate the hood latch and gnawed right through a decal and tore up my aluminum dash housing. Then they went to work on the wiring. Taught me to put the tractor back in the shed. Trouble is, the squirrels got into the shed and continued dining. Built a new squirrel-proof shed. Looks like you are gonna have to wait for those robins to hatch and fly away. Guess David will have to break out the push mower. Bob

HankB 16 #6 Posted May 5, 2010 As I read this, I looked out to see a robin looking for a spot to build a nest on our back porch. They've built nests on a wreath next to our back door in the past. My suggestion is to provide a better nest spot near where you park the tractors. Once robins build a nest there, they will prevent any other robins from nesting too close. I just found some info for building a robins nest site here: http://www.wild-bird-watching.com/Robins.html Build one of those and you can enjoy watching them raise their brood without taking your equipment out of service. Redbird 1 #7 Posted May 5, 2010 David and a push mower? With all the horses we have, he hasn't had any trouble finding another one to mow with. We don't mind the tie-up. It shows just how comfortable the animals are, around here. I love being able to go to the nests and check every day. Mama just flies off a few ft away and waits. We've had rabbits make their nest right under a tractor before, too. I handle the babies about a day after they're born. I breath on them, pet them, and, talk to them the same way I talked to their mamas when THEY were born. Every year the kids come back and have their kids. And, usually around or under the tractors.
