Oooo... Great 'n knoweligble small engine repair artists. I'am well versed in "Zen and the art of lawn mower manitance" But..... I just picked up a Worcester power master reel type push mower! very cool 1951 or 52 I belive. Has a small B&S hp unknown. No spark I know it needs points 'n cond. Now for he big question, how do I get the flywheel off, no puller holes, to close to engine case for 3 jaw puller. Flywheel is all aluminum on a cast crank, Don't wanna' bust the ol' gal ! What do I do? :D:USA: HORSEFEATHERS!

I'm not familar with your engine but I would guess the proceedure would be the same as for the little Kohlers. Look for some solid areas on the plate that you can pry on the flywheel without bending the plate. You can brace the plate from behind if neccessary. Apply preasure at 2 points as close to 180 degrees apart as you can and tap the crank (with the nut on) with a hammer. It's better to use a brass mallet if you have one. It's easier with 3 hands but if you get creative, it can be done solo.

Wallfish is spot on, only thing i can add is a little PB Blaster in the key way and around the crank will help things also.

Some tucky engine need a tool I believe called a flywheel knocker, it's a piece of metal made to set on the end of the crank and hit with a hammer to shock the flywheel loose so I'm told :D

for a simple fix you can use a newer coil and not need the points and

condenser

Guys, We all think alike! I already tried 2 moltorcycle tire tools very thin and wedged at end, tapped in behind flywheel gently and tapped on crank snout. Sprayed w/blaster, but no luck ,but of corse I was being kind and gentel! Kelly, I have seen the flywheel knockers but if I rember it threads in to the center o flywheel and covers crank snout then you hammer it to knock it off , don't know fer sure! No threads in this one. Magnetron conversion may be a soulition but it installs were you remove the points if I recall, so still need to remove the flywheel. I was going to drill and tap two holes and use steering wheel puller! That will work but Iwas thinkin' that might throw the flywheel out of ballance any ideas on that? soooo.....what to do? Thank You all for your help! And holler back if ya' come up with any other ideas! T.Y. :D HORSEFEATHERS!

You are thinking of the points elminator kits if you use a

newer briggs coil you can just trim wires under flywheel

for a quick fix or remove flywheel and remove points for

proper fix any newer briggs coil will work from

3-5 hp push mowers

You don't install the magnatron where the points go, you snip the wires to the points and don't deal with them anymore. Flywheel can stay on.

Flywheel will come off if you use an air tool on the crank while prying.

The older version Briggs w/aluminum flywheels used a "kit" that had 2 self-threading bolts along with a small puller head, nearly the same as a steering wheel puller. Drill , tap and thread the flywheel with 1/4" holes and use your steering puller, done this myself a lot lately on the same generation engines. Do not pry on the flywheel, you risk either bending the end of the crank or breaking the wheel itself. I'd stick a set of points back in it, they are still available.

Sarge, Thanks, yes I want to keep points and condenser set up! Drill 'n tap the flywheel is my way of thinkin' too! As you've read I did try the pry 'n pound very gingerly, but quit that! Bangin' on a crank installed in an engine, bad idea I think! Stood back 'n thought about it awile and came up with the drill 'n tap idea. Can't think of any better way than that . You have done this before! no problem with balance issues? Thats my only consern. Been holdin' off on this project waiting for a good soulition I belive this is it! I'am goin' for it! Let ya' know how it turns out! This ol' reel type is in reealy great shape love to get 'er goin' :D HORSEFEATHERS!

I doubt it. Pay very close attention to getting them diametrically opposite or at least on the same radius.

If you are still concerned with balance, then secure a couple aluminum bolts or all-thread of like thread size and 242 loctite them in the holes and trim flush when it goes back together. The weight difference will be negligible. with a coat of paint, no one would know to "holed" it... and you can drill them out again 22 years from now for another rebuild.

Thank You all for your replys! I went with the drill 'n tap used steering wheel puller and flywheel came right off! Used a compas to index and centerline the crank should be no concern of balance issues two holes at 180 can't belive that would be a problem! It's alive! Thought you all would like a photo! Soo... here she is a wonderful old machine! Thanks! :D HORSEFEATHERS!
