USHorse 41 #1 Posted April 30, 2010 Going to look at a 36" tiller?, no tags, so year unknown. Appears to have a seal leak as the tine shaft is stained on one side. Seller has no info on the tiller and is unfamilar, etc. Never seen it used. So....not knowing if it will be a properly functioning unit, how can I tell without hooking up to a tractor? If I rotate belt pully by hand, should tines rotate ? And lastly, seal replacement a headache on a tiller? Any help is gratefully appreciated. Heading home now so will check to see if any response in a bit...thanks again! :omg:
bewford 21 #2 Posted April 30, 2010 yep the tines should turn if you turn the pulley by hand. i check for slop in the gear box by rocking the drive pulley and watching the output shafts, not the tines there is usually some play between the outputshafts and the tines through the pins that hold the tines on the shaft. and i usually check for play in the input shaft, then pull it by the mount so the tines roll on the ground and watch the drive pulley spin to see if its bent or wobbles. all thats just my opinion of what the look for there willl be others. pfrederi 18,639 #3 Posted April 30, 2010 Seals are cheap and not that hard to install....Bigger concern is condition of the tines...they are very pricey to replace. If they have pointy ends they are worn
