Power Steering on a '74 C-120 Automatic

Recommended Posts

REDNGREEN

I am a newbie here but have grown up mowing with a Wheel horse as long as I can remember. I have a 2 year old son that will not let me mow without him. It gets very hard to steer while trimming and holding him at same time and running the hydro lever. I was wondering if power steering was ever an option on that model or if anyone else has ever done it using parts from another tractor. I think this would decrease my mowing time and possibly increase the chance of getting my wife to mow. Any help would be great.

Thanks,

Scott

I have a distant cousin who lost her friends child to a accident while riding on a lawn mower. And she seen on my facebook my child sitting on my tractor that she called me and said more words that I didn't even know could be groped together in that way. :omg:

Anyway just be careful

and by the way :D good to have you aboard

if you do a search you may find some info on your question.

good luck

I have been thinking of this very same task. I have been investigating using the power steering parts from a John Deere model 316, 318 or maybe a 420 or something like this. But in order for this to work, you would be better off with a hydr tractor with the hydro lift or you will need to add a power steering pump to operate the system. I have found parts of fleebay and it looks like it may cost about $150 to $300 and some head scratch'n to do this.

But don't count of the wife mowing even with the power steering and AC. :omg:

I just bought a Cub to rob the power steering off it, mind you it will not be a bolt on in any way, lots of fab work will be involved, and the parts will not be cheap, I paid $200 for the cub but I will part the rest of it out to get some of if not all of my money back.

And be very very careful with your kid, my uncle always said I'm not going to drop him till the day he droped my cousin to this day 25+ plus years later he has no fingers on one hand, and my uncle till he died felt bad, a working tractor is no place for a kid, when you not mowing take him for a ride, not when mowing.

Aside from the obvious safety issues which I too acknowledge, of those that have/are contemplating such a task, have you gotten any further?

Kelly? Raider12?

I can see how to pack an orbital valve in there ...especially those little Danfoss jobbers. But I really struggled with how to get some type of cylinder up front.

Thoughts? :D

I know its not too good of an idea to let him ride while mowing but its a pretty flat yard. Its hard to say no when your two year old says "I love the Wheel Horse Daddy" No I havent gottne any further on the power steering. It was just an idea. I barely have time to mow much less start another project with my only mowing tractor. I dont really want to hack it apart too bad either. I would like to restore it to as close to origianl as possible some day. If i did find the right valve and cylinder, could it be powered by the hydro pump or would I have to have another pump. I think last time I changed the filter and fluid it used 10W30 motor oil.

Thanks,

Scott
