stevenlandon 0 #1 Posted April 27, 2010 Well guys I started on my first restoration.. I found this beast buried in one of the barns on the girlfriends grandmas farm.. So here she is now in progress- The original tecumseh was junk.. I got a 5HP briggs from a buddy for it.. And when I drained the transaxle.. as you can see from the pics it came out baby poop brown.. Any tips for reassembly.. Gonna start in the next week or so once my frame gets back from the welders.. The color I went with was International Harvester Red.. Looks really well

stevenlandon 0 #5 Posted April 28, 2010 Ahhhh.... the resto road ahead Looks like a fine start Heres the thing.. I drug it out thinking id just clean it up and paint it and get it running.. Well that turned out differently.. The more and more I got into it I started taking everything off and painting it all.. I couldnt stop.. All i am gonna use this tractor for is to drive around at vintage snowmobile shows and around the farm with Heres what I started with..
linen beige 15 #6 Posted April 28, 2010 That Techy is NOT the original engine. The 401 had a Kohler K91t. There was a Techy powered model 551 in '61, but it used a different transmission, battery holder built into hoodstand, etc. Looks good though.

Duff 206 #9 Posted April 28, 2010 Steven, looks like a really nice project you've got going there. Great work so far! Just my humble two cents worth, but if you're going to put in the effort you appear to be devoting to this project, I'd split that tranny and clean out the insides properly - it's not that daunting a task. It would also give you the chance to check out the condition of things inside. It would be a real shame to work your buns off to have the tractor beautifully restored only to find out the tranny is toast and has to be torn back off the tractor. While WH trannies will take a lot of abuse and baby poop gushing from the innards after sitting for many years is not uncommon, that lovely color generally results from rust. Just my thoughts on the subject..... Duff :D

Just my thoughts on the subject..... Duff Im gonna split the tranny today and get it all cleaned up.. today.. I am replacing all the nuts and bolts in it with brand new stuff.. Probably stainless so it lasts a long time.. Hood looks perfect now.. I was able to save the original decals by masking over them. Hopefully ill be able to start reassembly next week
WheelHorse_of_course 99 #11 Posted April 29, 2010 :D Nice machine. You should get a cart. It is amazing how handy these are even without a mower. That is the machine grandpop had and my siblings and I spent a lot of time doing chores with it. Don't forget to have fun! :omg:
stevenlandon 0 #12 Posted April 30, 2010 Nice machine. You should get a cart. It is amazing how handy these are even without a mower. That is the machine grandpop had and my siblings and I spent a lot of time doing chores with it. Don't forget to have fun! I got the mowing deck, a cultvator and a gang reel mower for it and a blade.. but those are other projects on the list to dos.. For now shes just gonna be a runner.. Been soaking all the bolts on all the attachments so when I do decide to work on them I wont snap em off.. I got the frame back today from the welders.. gotta sand and paint that and do the wheels and she should be ready to start reassembly

tgranthamfd 29 #14 Posted April 30, 2010 Here is a pretty good read on that tranny rebuild. There are some pictures and links for bearings, bushings, and seals. In one of Mikes RJ's post has a link to the manual, as well. Good luck. Worse part about these tranny's is getting the case on and off of the gears. Here's the link. http://www.wheelhorseforum.com/index.php?showtopic=10959
