Help need bearing for C-160 48" side discharge mow

Recommended Posts

C-160 Tractor

Hello All,

I joined this site hoping to get a little help.

I have a 1978?? I think wheel horse C-160 8-speed tractor, with Kohler K341s 16HP engine..

I also have a 48" Mower deck that I am trying to get a bearing for the center shaft in the center spindle. (A new shaft as well if possible)

Does any one have any diagrams or know where I can order parts?

I took it apart and there are 2 bearing in one end and 1 in the other end.

The side with the 2 bearings is bad. Both are broken.

I have the scraps... :omg:

Also the center shaft has a grease fitting on one end and a little hole that goes into the spindle to oil the bearings.

Well that shaft is pretty messed up (from the broken bearings), but I will re-use it if I have to.

Think I will have any luck getting the bearings and shaft?

I know there is a serial number on the deck, not sure if that helps at all.

Can someone help me figure this out.

I am in the process of getting the old wheel horse in better shape.

Iordered a few parts from Kirk Engines to help me out. :D

here is the pulley shaft.

(I can take pics of anything if it will help me figure out what I need.?)

Thanks in advance for any help you maybe able to offer me.

I will check back in a few days.

Thanks

Brian

The part number of the deck will help considerably.

Once you have that I expect one of our other members will post a parts diagram for the original spindle (though it may have been replace at some point.

There are three types I am aware of:

One type usually has a light (magnesium?) casing and has a roller bearing at the bottom and a very standard ball bearing at the top. I have rebuilt these without problems.

There is one that I believe has two different ball bearings (one large and one small) with a spacer. I have never taken one of these apart.

The final type I am familiar with has a bearing assembly that includes the top and bottom bearing as well as the shaft as a complete assembly not intended to be repaired, just replace.

The other factor to check is the blade end of the spindle. Does it have a Double D (2 flats) with a hole in the middle or is it round with threads on the outside.

Good luck

:D :omg:

Thanks

:omg:

Happy to be here!

So I went out to look at that tag I saw and some of it is under a piece of metal.

I am not sure if you can gather anything from the numbers I did get.

It read

48MS01-6285

6321

here are some pics I snapped.

Is this to bad to just re-use?

thanks for looking and offering your input.

Yeah, the shaft is too bad to reuse.

Go to the wheel horse links at the top of this page and then to Toro parts finder and put the decks model # in. You will get the diagram/parts list w/numbers to order. You should have a number in front of the 48MS01 (example: 05-48MS01)

Shaft #107413

Bearing set # 16 includes all the inner parts you need.

Housing looks to be ok as far as I can see.

Hope this helps. :omg:

thanks Gents!

this assembly kit is over $200 bills!

thats too much for me.

But I think I can get away with getting. 17, 18, 19, and 21?

I have all the other parts and they do not seem that bad.

even those parts will cost me $100. :D

I guess you have to pay to fix old stuff.

:omg:

I thank you all for the help.!

I knew I would find what I need here.

Your deck model is more apt to be 75-48MS01 with a 6321 build date = November 16, 1976. Slim chance it could be a 65-48MS01. Posting this is case these models use different parts than the 1980 model.

thanks bud,

I better take that metal piece off and check the 1st number. I can see a 5 but not sure what is before that.

Hi again!

Happy Fathers day again to you all!

Today I also was able to finally.. Order up a few more parts for the deck on my C-160.

After looking at both 75-48MS01, 65-48MS01, and 05-48MS01 I determined mine is truly a 05-48MS01...

I checked the tag, but it was just rusty under the bolt and I was unable to tell the number before the 5.

So after looking at the pictures and what I have, I definitely have the 05-48MS01.

so I ordered these parts and cannot wait to get them all installed..

Product ID - Description -Quantity -Price

6738 - V BELT - 1 - $23.97

106075 - SEAL - 1 - $5.26

106070 - SPACER-SEAL - 1 - $7.36

106085 - BEARING-BALL - 1 - $17.48

108849 - ASSY-SPINDLE S HAFT (7" X 3/4" SHAFT ) -1 -$64.51

302-5 -FITTING-GREASE -1 -$1.87

106068 -SPACER-BLADE - 1 - $3.36

Subtotal: $123.81

Tax: $7.74

Shipping Cost: $14.95

Total Price: $146.50

I hope it all works out great after this, because that's some mulla I'm spending. lol

I also need to repaint the whole tractor, but didn't want to go with the red... Is that a big No No or do people paint there tractors any color?

I was thinking drab green and buy new stickers as well.

kind of military.

I also want to add some cup holders. lol

hi guys,

I got all the deck parts installed and the only thing that did not fit was the v-belt. (get to why in a min)

I used the old one, but it was in pretty bad shape.

I managed to hook the deck back up myself using some pictures i found on google for how to remove it. (I was going to wait for the PO to show me, but figured it out.)

then I took it around my lawn and it was cutting great and I was so happy!

then I noticed it was not cutting good anymore after a few passes.

I stopped it, turned it off and looked under it to see the belt all mangled looking (what I could see through the space where the main drive belt hooked up.

More about the new belt and how it didn't fit.

I did some more research and I found out a few more details.

I ordered belt part number 6738 using the Deck model number 05-48MS01.

When I got the belt it looked much shorter than the old one I had.

So I went back on and did some more research....

I typed in 85-48MS01 and that said it was for a 1978 and that is what the PO told me the tractor was.

The picture looks similar, I noticed on the shaft bolt that I ordered was a little different than the one I had as well. (luckily that worked for me!) but the shaft for the 85-48MS01 looked more like mine with the large bolt on the bottom side.

Well the V-belt for that one is part number 1594.

now I have not repaired the belt yet or removed and measured the old torn one...

(I am going to use a tape and measure the way the belt is run to confirm before I get a new belt)

But here are the differences.

05-48MS01 (for 1980 model) v-belt 6738 is .5" x 86"

and

85-48MS01 (for 1978 model) v-belt 1594 is .5" x 107"

so I KNOW for sure I ordered the wrong belt, I am not 100% sure which one I need yet still.

but tomorrow when I take it all back apart I hope to find out.

I am thinking I will want to return the belt that is too short and I want to buy the correct one.

I am very happy that all the other parts went in no problem and they seam to be the same as in both models.

but I need the belt!

There is a local tractor store near me and I wonder if they have the belt I need?

I will check, also does Lowes carry belts?

(I ordered a filter online, then went to lowes and they had wheel horse tractor filters too! haha)

stinks when you need a model number and everything is there except the 1st number which is a big deal! lol

thanks guys

P.S. the new shaft that was threaded on both ends I tried to use the old bolt and I messed up the threads on the new shaft! and had to cut the nut off because I could not get back off. lol

woops!

I went out and bought two new bolts. should have in 1st place.

(now that I think about it I bet if I ordered the correct shaft my old bolt would have been fine.)

I used the new bolt to cut the threads back in and then used the 2nd new bolt to attach it. it was fine still, not a big deal.

So anyway here are some pics.

thanks again for all the help,

I am getting to the bottom of it all and to the fun stuff!

like driving it with my kid and almost mowing my lawn! haha

(got half the front yard done remember lol)

when I do get the new belt how tight is it supposed to be?

my setup has a rod with a pully wheel and a spring and 2 clamps that hold the rod down to the deck.

how tight does that belt need to be?

thanks

The C-160 was made from 1974-1977. With the date code on the deck, 6321, your tractor is maybe a 1976 or 1977. I am guessing the VIN will be 71-16k801. Get the info off the ID tag on the left side of the hood stand....

The deck belt should be held tight by that spring. The rod and pulley slide under those clamps allowing the spring to apply tension.

yeah my vin is 71-16K801-2164

weird when I look at the 1976 (65-48MS01) and 1977 (75-48MS01) they do not look like the same spindle assembly at all!

how can that be..?

But looking at the belt part number on each they both use a 1594 v-belt which is what i need! that is the .5x107" belt..

pretty confusing little tractor, at least I know what I need but it would be nice to get all this Model info correct.

thanks man

Brian: Looks like you did a great job rebuilding your spindle for the mower deck with what information you had to go on. The best way to lean these mower deck rebuildings is do one. Having the right manual helps but you will notice on several of the mower deck manuals/part lists that they often had two types of spindles and spindle housings that could interechage with the deck. And if you have 36 inch mower decks you even had greaseable spindles on the older decks with the newer mule drive.

One thing I have done on all my rebuildes is change the bolts in the spindle housing that attaches to the deck with new grade eight bolts. They get a lot of wear and tear underneath and on top the deck and I hate havign to use and easyout to get them out when the head of the bolt gets banged up. I also put just a little white lithium grease on the bolts and in the pulley housing before slipping on the spindle shafts.

Looks like you have a good useable deck to mow with that should last a few years.

just for the record your right, its a 1977.

Also when I look up 75-48MS01 it says 48" cutting deck and 1977 but has no diagram or images of the 48" deck only the 42" deck, thats why I was so confused.

Just an update I ordered a new belt for 10.51 plus 9$ shipping so that is on its way.

I am also waiting to hear back if Toro will let me return the belt I bought in error and get a refund.

I was going to do an exchange but they want 28 bucks for that belt.

thanks a lot, I am very glad to be getting this all straight.

I know a lot more about it now and I feel comfortable repairing it all myself now. :D

The Deck I have is 48" and each spindle is grease-able. :thanks:

they each have a grease fitting on the top side of the shaft.

I filled them all up really good the other day.

thanks for the tips on the spindle, I replaced a few bolts that broke on the tensioner, but the spindle bolts screw from the top down so where easy to get out.

I can see what you mean by the looks of my spindle housing it is all chewed up from years of abuse and thrashing from sticks and rocks or whatever. lol

I hope it lasts me some time, and if it breaks again in future I know exactly where to go to get parts and find stuff for repairs.

thanks again all!

:D

:D Cool !!

Looks like you are having a blast with your :D

The chain you made for the back of the deck looks like it works. There should be a trunnion and a threaded rod there. That is used to level the mower deck.

When you are an old gray hard goat like me, you may want to replace it so your lawn will be the envy of the street :thanks:
