1st time painting- How do I do it

Ive spent the better part of the day sanding and prepping my 61 wheel horse for paint..

Ive never painted anything in my life before.. What should I use.. I have access to an air sprayer but never used one before.. Ive rattlecanned alot of jobs on vintage sleds.. So what would you guys recommend

If you don't have experience with the compressor you may find it a bit frustrating getting it dialed in.

so you might want to stay with the rattle can.

:D If you're comfortable with a rattle can, I'd say stay with it. After a few myself, I'm pretty happy with the results they can bring. (and definatly the ease of use). :omg:

If it's going to be a worker, spray cans will do a good enough job. However, if you plan on this being a show queen, by all means take some time to learn how to use an HVLP sprayer. The results, after some practice, will be much more satisfying than a rattle job.

I have two types of HVLP sprayers. One uses a gravity feed gun and a compressor, and the other uses a siphon feed with a turbine (blower).

Since I don't paint all that often, I have to practice each time I use either.

I have some experience with rattle-cans and for the best results, preparation is key. I usually sand or if you have acess to a sandblaster try to remove the paint so you start-out with bare metal first. I usually use ruddy-brown primer after a thourough sanding with 80 or 100 grit sandpaper. I usually prime the bare metal then after drying completely, sand with 220 grit. I prime a second time and after drying, wet sand with 400 grit. wipe everything down to be painted then shoot the color in two coats, the first coat being rather light. The final coat can be thicker with an overlap. Hope this is helpful. Good luck!!

Well I ended up going with the rattlecan method and im pleased with the results.. I sanded all the rust off.. not to bare metal. then went with the Rustoleum Rusty Metal Primer.. let it dry.. and then hit it with the Rustoleum Farm Implement paint in International Harvester red.. It was exactly like the Regal Red except a buck cheaper.. Got most of the parts primed.. and some painted. Basically this little tractor is for my girlfriend to run around at sled shows with.. Ended up snapping off a peice on one of the foot rests.. Gotta go get that welded tomarrow.. And then degrease the rear end..

All In all im pleased with the results so far.. and I cannot wait to drive my first wheel horse.. Spring fever has got me.. once the wheel horse is done.. its onto the JD 420

Rattel cans are great, I'am personaly responsable for a large depletion of the ozone layer!( Lots 'o spray bombs) But guys, a spray gun is just another tool no need to be afraid! And the results are fantastic! Rattel cans on a large surface leaves a dry finnish 'n tiger stripes. Get yer guns out'n practice ! "You have nothing to fear but fear it's self" !HORSEFEATHERS!
