1961551 2 #1 Posted April 14, 2010 ok, i have splurged. i have moved into unchartered waters. i dont really like the looks of the newer tractors. but i have aquired a free a 312-8 from a freind who's dad passed. it has a k series 12hp, k301s engine. it looks good and mows perfect. i kinda like it... kinda. maybe the looks will grow on me. anyway, i hear a slight noise in the engine at idle. not a knock, not a wrist pin. more like a slight growl/churn noise. (bearing) no belts turning. i know you cant answer that from my description. does the balance gear engines have any noise? has sat for 8-10 years until last week. pics are when i got it. i think it will clean up nice. jimmy
Kelly 1,033 #2 Posted April 14, 2010 Take the PTO bell all the way off the engine, it might be a bad bearing in there, its a start.
clintonnut 126 #3 Posted April 14, 2010 Mine does the same thing. It is the PTO bell. I also found if the ball bearings inside the engine have too much load they will whine but if the RPMs rise that whine gets louder. Take the PTO bell off. It will probably fix it. If it does then put a blob of grease inside the bell to see if that fixed it. Charlie
Coadster32 793 #4 Posted April 14, 2010 You stepped in it is what you're saying! Nice pickup. I agree to check out the PTO bell. Seems simple, and it's also the easiest to do.
Duff 206 #5 Posted April 14, 2010 Darn, Jimmy! If you lived a little closer I would volunteer to take that 312-8 off your hands before the noise drives you batty! But seriously, I think the fellas are on the right track with the PTO bell. And you may actually come to really like that tractor once you've had a chance to play with it for a while (but I'm known for being fond of the 312-8's!).
