I guess you mean the cage thingy that holds all the balls in?

I've had that off to have a look, but there was nothing wrong with either of the ones I have here, so put it all back together.

Its not hard to do, although getting that little snap ring off the end of the shaft is a bit of a pain. Think I ended up stabbing myself several times with a pick, and sticking the end of the clip up under my fingernail in the process.

The one thing to watch out for that is not mentioned in the WH Onan Manual (although it is shown in a picture) is the fact that there is a little ball that sits under the governor shaft in the cover. It can fall out and get lost if you are not aware of its presence. Ask me how I know... :omg:

Do I understand you correctly that a complete (major anyway) dis-assembly is not required to replace the "plastic cage" and cover that sits on the cam?

The guy I just bought it from said he had the "cover" off to look at it, found out he needed to take the motor apart to fix it, so he super glued it (held for about a season) and has never "properly fixed it" But says it is messed up again. He said it only does it when it get REALLY hot out, but it is easily controlled by the throttle if you know what's going on.

I never attempted to get the plastic thing off the gear itself, I imagine that it would be difficult to do without destroying it.

The manual states: "The flyball spacer, plate, and camshaft gear are

serviced as an assembly only." and I see that the parts list shows the plastic thingy as an assembly with the gear.

If the engine was still on the tractor all those balls would want to drop out when you take the plate of the front of the cam. You could probably hold them in for assembly with a dab of grease.

If you did have to remove the cam to service the gear etc, it would be possible on the tractor, but you'd need to pull the valves so you could move the lifters out of the way. The cam needs to be jiggled around a bit, and clocked the right way to come out of the block.

Probably the cheapest way to fix it would be to get a cam, gear and governor ball assembly from a dead engine and use that. There are a lot of dead ones around with loose valve seats. :omg:

There is a better manual for the Onans here: http://www.mytractorforum.com/showthread.p...&highlight=onan

Its actually the JD service manual, and has a lot of photographs, and "step by step" instructions.

Good luck!
