SuperTrap Quiet Mufflers

Recommended Posts

T-Mo

I brought this up in last night's chat. My C-141 needs a new muffler and I don't care much for those little pepper-pot types. I found this yesterday and, to tell the truth, I don't know much about them. I'm a little skeptical but I wanted to know if anyone here has heard of them.

Quiet Muffler

How it works

Model Selection Guide

I found where one person has used one on a Power Trac. Tractorbynet discussion forum

A quieter PT422

So guys, anyone heard of this, and if so, what ya think?

True, it's a bit pricey. But, unless I do the stack thing (which could add up eventually) the only other alternatives is the pepper-pot (loud?) or a new OEM one. I have priced the OEM mufflers for the C141 and prices run from $121 to $144. I have saw a couple of used ones on ebay, but they may or not be better than what I have. So I found this Supertrapp and just wanted to get some honest opinions.

Looks like what I had on my dune buggy, We had to have a spark arrestor on them to run them at Silver lake, it made my 4cly. VW alot quieter and it was made by supertrap, I think I only paid $40 for mine but that's been 15-18 years ago.

Terry, is your current muffler rusted out? You could always paint it with BBQ grill paint.

Terry, why not head down your local muffler replacement center and ask if you can have a rummage through their dumpster :thumbs:

You should be able to find all the parts you need for stack building.

You might even get them for free :D

Terry,

I've used Supertrapps on formula cars. Some tracks have a max decible requirement. The ones we used were tuneable. By adding/removing baffles, you could get where you neede to be. They are pricey, but in this case, you get what you pay for. That's hard to come by these days.

A friend of mine sprays W-D 40 on his headers , same as a muffler and the burn off is not bad . With time they turn black and rusy resistant . After every use spray down and let set , then when you fire up it burns off . With time they are black and shinny . Surprized me !

My muffler is just not rusty - it's loud to the point of being almost nonexistent. I need a new one. I think I will either go with a stack or possibly one of these Super Traps.

Don't forget the option of building a muffler, Terry. (or having one built)

A piece of 3.5" or 4" exhaust tubing with a couple of end caps welded on and a baffled inner pipe can be made pretty cheap.

You could even copy the original so it fits in the same place.

Here's some pictures of the stack on the Charger (Farmall Cub muffler):

Nice, Terry. It looks like you threaded in a 45 elbow, then a 4 inch nipple and then a 90. Sorry for my :imstupid: but is the muffler then welded into the 90? Nice idea to use a clamp at that point, with I'm assuming a bracket back to the pto bolt. Which Farmall Cub stack is that (i.e. inlet diameter)? And last question, is it quiet enough (depending on what one would call quiet, I guess)?

Close nipple to a 45 elbow.... then a 3" nipple to the 90. There's a 4" nipple screwed in to the 90 for the stack to slide down over.

(you might need a longer horizontal piece of pipe than 3" because of the hood width on your tractor.)

A real Farmall Cub (the old red ones) had a piece of 1" black pipe screwed in to the manifold, so it's a perfect fit. The clamp can be bought at TSC too, but mine is off of a Briggs & Stratton "something".

It is quiet, but not too quiet and has a very nice sound.

That's a real nice setup Terry. Get you a little rain flapper from TSC, and you'll be set!

I was going to put one on there, but I can't take the "tink - tink - tink - tink" noise they make!

I was thinking a 4 inch nipple between the 45 and 90. Question, and again, sorry for my :imstupid: but does that muffler have a number like Farmall 1 or something like that?

The TSC # is IH-1, I think. It was the smallest IH muffler there.

Just grab a piece of 1" black pipe off the shelf and take it to where the muffler display is. (That's what I did! )

Thanks, I was at TSC today and unfortunately closest they had was a AC-something or other, about 1 3/8 diameter inlet. I have to check a couple other places that carries mufflers.

They're all over the web.

Here's an example!

You might even be able to get one at NAPA. (mine is made by Stanley)

How would one of the kohler replacement mufflers work? Ive got one on the shelf but never stuck it on an engine so i cant say what it sounds like.

They have roughly the same sound as the Farmall muffler and are a little easier to mount to the horizontal pipe from the engine. (one less elbow)

My "problem" with them is the ugly bracket welded to the side.

Went by another hardware place this morning and they had the IH-1. The inlet is a little loose on a 1 inch pipe but I'm assuming it will clamp down. If not, then may have to be welded. I think I will go with this exhaust.

Nick,

That's a viable option there, but like TT, I'm not sure about that bracket. I can mount it vertically also without using a 90 to turn it up like I would for the IH-1 stack. Hmmm, if it wasn't for that ugly bracket that would be an excellent option.

Doesnt look like that tab would be to hard to trim off but there is also a Nelson muffler with 1" pipe threads on both ends. I think that was was around $20 back when I got it. Either way I like to keep them small so i dont bounce them off to many things.
