Expert Opions.

Hi all. As most of you all know, I have a very well taken care of 211-5 wheel horse. it all works just fine and I have done a few mods to it. Anyway, I no issue with the 11Hp briggs on it, but I still sometimes would like to have more power. I do use this tractor for my lawn and a few clients in my lawn care, so it has to be more of a work horse, than a show piece.

Ok, now here are my questions. I went to a local OPE junkyard and i found several engine that could work as replacemnt for my current engine.

1. 15HP OHV briggs, $150

2. 16HP Briggs twin $200

3. 16HP briggs twin $200

4. 14HP briggs OHV with possible knock, about $100

5. 18Hp briggs twin with no compression, as I was able to turn it very easy with my hands, the 16s I could also turn, but they would be hard on the compression stroke. Price unknown..

I'm thinking shoot for the 15HP briggs and then get it up to par, but I really would lvoe to fine an engine, like a twin so I can dual stacks! :omg: and then rebuild it and stick it in my machine.

NOTE: I'm the one who modded his 11Hp briggs govenor by accident and got it to rev to 3900RPM on full trottle. So the engine can not blow up, I have put in 15-50W Mobile ful syn, and put on a tach, so when using the machine, I can keep the rpms at around 3400. I really hate doing this, but if I don't, then the RPM go way down with the mower deck is engadge. This is the other reason why I would love to go bigger...

I don't know which 200 series you have -early or late - but the biggest mower deck offered on any 200 series was a 42-incher. Biggest engine was a 16-hp.

(Edit: I didn't see it in your signature first go-around...you have the "early", B-style)

Extra power is always a nice thing, but I'm not sure anything more than 16 would be usable unless you're trying to cut heavy grass at extremely high speed. Most of the time, you'll just be consuming a little extra fuel and not really having any significant benefit (other than a morale booster :D ).

Anything with a 1" shaft diameter and 3" - 3.5" long should work without modifying clutches or pulleys. If you go big, you might need to cut the hood to fit it in. :omg:

I've always liked the Briggs opposed twin cylinder engines. They are pretty smooth running and have a more pleasant, quieter sound than a single. Of course if you mount dual stacks that might not be much of a benefit to you.

If any of the Briggs engines you listed are Vanguards, that would be choice #1. Otherwise, the old style opposed twins are pretty nice.

3400-3600 rpm is normal for a typical air cooled engine. Under load, it probably ought to be running at 3000-3400-ish and full throttle/no-load will be higher.

I doubt you'd blow it up at 3900 rpm unless you ran it there for extended periods with no load. In general, engines don't like to rev with no load.

Before you spend any money on a Briggs, Vanguard that needs rebuilding check the price of parts. They can get real expensive on the older models. New vertical shaft Vanguards are not that high priced. And you may find a good engine on another brand mower that has a blown trans.

He's right on price of parts for a briggs vanguard. I have a 18hp briggs parallel twin v shaft. it needed freshened up. I got new rings and gaskets and a few other parts for carb. ordered without asking how much parts would be and soiled my paints when he said 230. And after further inspection i found one piston cracked. the guy i got parts from found me one used for thirty bucks. i did all work myself I would have hated to see the price of someone else doing the work.this doesn't include the cost of plugs new air filter wires and fuel filter and other mis. parts I had to buy. I would guess I have close to 350 to 400 in this engine. not to mention the pulley was a bear to get off

I need a muffler for this now I almost hate to see the cost of that.

thanks guys for all of the help. The engines are old stype briggs boxer twins. No vangaurds or v-twins. I really would love to get one of those twins, but I didn't know what shaft size I needed, as I wanted to keep my current pulley system. Also, if I do have to do a rebuild on the twin, how much would it cost? I know that it can be expensive, as i did a half rebuild on a onan twin and the rings/gaskets/plugs were about 100 bucks! It only took about two days of work, so time is not a bad thing for me. Also, is there a place where i could get a diragram on how this things goes together, so i can take it all apart and try to repaint it. LOL.

Also, when I have the deck engadged, I rev the engine up to 3400RPM and when its cutting grass and moving, its slows down about 100-200 rpms.

Today I have been calling around and looking for any better deals on a engine, and the only things I found that might work were; an older non seized 12.5HP briggs twin for 80 bucks and a 26 Kholer Pro v-twin that needs new rods and is for 100bucks. I might get it a little cheaper, but i don't know.. Well, thanks for the help and if you guys have some more feedback, that would be great

Ugg, thats makes me cry!. LOL. If I get to go to the wh show this summer, then I will let you know, so you can bring them. LOL. Thats my last resort..
