62vetteefp 0 #1 Posted April 7, 2010 63 lawn ranger with 64 engine. Did run at one time but never well. Have spark, have good gas, turns over great. squirted gas in plug hole and still will not start. Rebuilt carb but when it did not start installed new carb. Still will not start. What do I look for next? thanks
Gerry w 2 #2 Posted April 7, 2010 does yours have a shut off switch? If so could the ground be loose or the wire cut or shorted out?
62vetteefp 0 #3 Posted April 7, 2010 Has key. When key is on I have spark, when off no spark. So not an electrical issue?
rickv1957 74 #4 Posted April 7, 2010 Does compression seem ok?,Rick
rickv1957 74 #6 Posted April 7, 2010 Possibly your ignition timing is off,Rick
62vetteefp 0 #7 Posted April 7, 2010 OK, how do I check ignition timing? I know how to do it on a car and have a gun but where is the flywheel and everything else!!!!!!!
BPjunk 184 #8 Posted April 8, 2010 You can use a "timing light" to see if there is a spark when you "hear" the piston come up to TDC (with out the plug installed) but I would place money of the fact that the plug may be a bad plug. Wild Bill
Coadster32 793 #9 Posted April 8, 2010 You could also pop off the flywheel and look to see if the key is sheered off.
oilcrazy 0 #10 Posted April 8, 2010 If it's a Champion plug, throw it away and try an A C or Bosch, I've had Champions right out of the box that wouldn't fire.
TheUnknownCat 0 #11 Posted April 8, 2010 Tune up. Points, plug, condenser, clean the coil and flywheel surfaces. Cheap enough, and it needs it anyway -whether it is this problem or not, probably is though. :omg:
pfrederi 18,670 #12 Posted April 8, 2010 Fly wheel Key First to evaluate. Then point gap. If you have spark then the points/condenser are probably OK. If the gap is way off it may affect timing but I am betting on the key
62vetteefp 0 #13 Posted April 11, 2010 Thanks guys, took the flywheel off and cleaned everything up. Put it back together and it now runs. did put a plug in it but that did not fix it. Thinks I will put the old plug back in and see if it runs, just to check.
