Solid State Ignition Question

Guys,

On the 14 HP K321, I have the solid state coil that has two wires that merge into one wire that connects to the single prong on the solid state coil. One wire goes to the ignition switch. The other wire goes behind the engine shroud. Where behind the shroud does it go to?

There are still two wires that come from the engine that go to the reg/rectifier, so could this unknown wire go to the stator?

The stators used on the engines with breakerless ignition have a third wire to power the ignition system.

The other two wires go to the rectifier/regulator.

If I remember correctly the wire goes to a trigger unit mounted right beside the flywheel. There is a "hump" made on the fly wheel so as it goes by it triggers the ignition just like a set of points would. These sytems I have found very expensive to repair and usally best to change over to points if you have any major problems

If I were to change over to points, can I just dead end that wire?

If it in deed is the wire going to the trigger modual, yes you could dead-end the wire. In order to change over to points you do have to remove the oil pan. In the front of the engine (side with the carb) the is a area make on the block to mount the point set. There, you will find a very small plug that has to knocked out in order to install the small pin that runs off the cam to operate the points. (this will fall into the oil pan) I did this change over to points probably 15 years ago to my raider. And I have yet had to touch the points at all.

When I had problems with my ignition, it was with the trigger modual. So I had already removed the flywheel. I just eliminated the trigger and the unused wires at that time.

I do have a "tested" replacement coil on the way, so if it works it will stay original. But if it does not, I am weighing my options. The block already has the holes for the points, so it would be an easy transition if I can just dead end that wire...

If you remove the blower housing, you can just unplug the wire at the trigger. (pick up)

There's no need to do anything else - unless you want to remove the trigger and try to sell it.

Kohler actually offers a complete conversion kit: LINK

If you feel adventurous, you can drill a small hole in the plug in the push rod hole, screw in a small sheetmetal screw, and pull the plug out - instead of driving it in.

(pack the flutes of the drill bit with hard grease to catch any chips)

That way you don't need to remove the oil pan. :omg:

The holes were already punched out. There was nothing but dirt in the holes. Thanks for the link. I would still need a solenoid right? Also, would the current ignition switch work?

Starter switch you have will not work with a points ignition (battery). one wire you see on the coil goes to the trigger, the other to teh ignition switch where it is grounded when you turn it off. Do you have a solenoid now...if so you will keep it.

Update:

The used solid state coil came in and it too was bad. It looks like this is going to be converted over to points. I took the shroud off this morning to get a look at the pickup unit. Here's a picture;

There are two wires coming off the pickup unit, one goes to the coil and the other goes behind the flywheel somewhere.

The stator on these is different, it has the normal section that generates current for the voltage regulator and charging system (2 wires) and then a small part that makes current for the ignition system (1 wire) that feeds the trigger assembly. (The trigger terminals are not interchangeable)

Did you check your coil with a multimeter?? I have the specs somewhere if you need them.

You will not need to change the stator. The charging system will work OK. Need to cap off the ignition lead.

103990 works on battery/point systems. Or go to TSC, Lowes etc find a generic 5 pin that has an I terminal (and no M terminal)
