Pirate 0 #1 Posted March 29, 2010 I found one of the front tires on my new 414-8 has a big crack in the sidewall. Still holds air, so I'm shopping 1 or possibly 2 new front tires. Lots of choices out there. I'm looking for a turf tread. I will be using it to mow grass. 2 ply? 4 ply? What tires have you others used with good results? Suggested online source? buckeye 5 #2 Posted March 30, 2010 my opinion- 4 ply. the best. - carlisle. check out miller tire in the links page. my other opinion, (if you want the best, and have the $$) swap spindles, and get yourself some 8" wheels for easier steering. :omg:

barns1 57 #4 Posted March 30, 2010 I have 2 414-8's. 86 & 88 models and both came with 8" wheels. Should not have had 6" according to my manuals. Hope this helps. I believe the 300 series had the 6" wheels.

barns1 57 #6 Posted March 30, 2010 Not sure unless someone swapped front wheels at one time.
Pirate 0 #7 Posted March 30, 2010 Hope they are 6", as I just bought a Carlisle Turf Master 2, from Walmart, for $20. only 2 ply, but a good brand, and I needed it now. Got a little riding time in today, towing a dethatcher attachment I had from a smaller tractor. Every time I ride the trsctor, I am so impressed with it. I'm not going to miss the 4 year old Lawn Machine (MTD) 17.5 hp Briggs. Must be smaller horses!
rickv1957 74 #8 Posted March 31, 2010 I sure like the old style carlisle turf tires,Rick

Irv 115 #10 Posted April 2, 2010 I put 8" wheels on my 312 and didn't have to change spindles and I've swapped wheels between c-series and 300 and 400 series without needing different spindles.
can whlvr 994 #11 Posted April 2, 2010 i have too but 8inch rims use the short spindles so the machine doesnt sit high in the front
v65animal 0 #12 Posted April 4, 2010 How much $$$ and effort is involved in putting 8" wheels/tires on a 3 series. One I'm currently looking at has 6.5" wheels - 2000 model year. I'm also looking at a 2005 model, waiting to hear back what size front wheels it has. I'm hoping it has 8" Any benefit in putting bigger wheels in the back? Or are there bigger ones? I have a ROUGH yard, which is why I just sold my LT133 I bought new in 2001. Since moving to this house 3 years ago, the vibrations broke the bolts that hold the engine to the frame. I thought taller and wider wheels would help. I have been looking for a 400 series just because of the bigger wheels. I only have a 1/2 acre and have no plans for a tiller or blade, so I really don't need a 400 series if I can get tires/wheels to fit a 300. Thanks, Sam

Sam, larger wheels will help a little - as will slight under inflation of the tire - but if things are rough enough to break bolts on the tractor and maybe knock fillings out of your teeth- time to grab a load or two of topsoil and fill in the worst spots of the lawn - maybe to a depth of an inch or so a year in the low spots. that's got to be the cheapest way in the long run. Nick 13 #14 Posted April 4, 2010 My memory is always suspect but didnt the bagger deck rub on 8" tires unless smaller 6" tires were installed. Could be why it has smaller tires unless they just had a flat and installed what was around.

I've filled some of them in. You can't always see them, we have Bermuda grass. The grass is so thick, it covers over the hole, until you step in it and twist and ankle. I'm told the yard was originally all wooded, now the tree stumps/roots are rotting and creating various sink holes. Also, the street gutter, just goes to an underground pipe, which dumps in the backyard, lots of tree roots exposed. I take it slow over those spots. We are looking into adding a load of top soil in the back this year. Thanks!
rick 255 #16 Posted April 4, 2010 Okay, if this has been mentioned, I missed.....if the tractor was equipped with a 37" deck at some time, the front wheels were changed to 15x6 for deck clearance. My 310-8/37" deck combo is equipped that way. The other three in my herd are 16x8 equipped. Not saying the small deck is on it now, but it could have been. I can show you the black mark on the leading edge of my 37" deck...I had to try it, put the deck on my 314-8, rubbed every time on a hard left turn... Just a thought. BTW, two ply tires will carry the weight just fine, unless maybe you add a loader or a blower. Two plies will ride a little easier, too.
qd-16 14 #17 Posted April 4, 2010 I just finished upgrading my 310 from the 6inch to 8 inch front tires. I like the bigger tires a lot better. This was very easy to do, the 8 inch rims, spindles came from short frame parts tractors I had. Everything was a direct fit. Since my 310 has the 36 inch deck there are no clearance issues.
