Dave 0 #1 Posted March 29, 2010 I was checking the oil in my k181 yesterday. I'm not sure why but I started the engine with the dip stick out. It sprayed a fine mist of oil out of the dipstick hole. There was quite a bit of air coming out of there. Is this normal? :omg:
mavfreak 11 #2 Posted March 29, 2010 could be. did you check your compression? also a leak down test?
W9JAB 156 #3 Posted March 29, 2010 :omg: As the piston goes up and down, you have a negative and positive pressure in the crank case, the negative pressure (vacuum) is tapped for pulling fuel into the carb. Positive pressure can be used for different things like chain oilers, or just relived by the use of a breather valve.
WheelHorse_of_course 99 #4 Posted March 29, 2010 Not only that, consider the connecting rod has a slinger who's job is to throw oil all over to keep the engine lubricated. (hard to believe this method works, but it does) :omg:
Dave 0 #5 Posted March 29, 2010 Thanks. I haven't done any compression or leakdown tests. It runs great so I just change the oil once in awhile. I was just curious about the spray out of the oil filler hole. I solved the problem though.... I put the dip stick back in. No more spray! Don't worry.... I'm thinking of doing a total engine rebuild this fall. I'll have more questions then.
