876wheelhorse 46 #1 Posted March 25, 2010 ok working at work tonight and thought about this. we have big drums the welding wire comes in. so i start brain storming what if i fill that up with concrete. id have to measure out on both ends the center. put in prob a 2 inch axle. now i am hearing that this is going to be heavy. I asked around and people are guessing 800-1000 pounds it could hold. i pulled my grandpas big roller last year it had he said around 900 pounds in it. i used a 876 to do that. now if i feel a concrete drum up with concrete is this going to stay in one piece. concrete expands so if i have a round drum is it going to look like a egg when i am done? being carboard i am going to put a plastic trash bag in to keep the wetness off the cardboard. then i was thinking just to let it sit up for a bit a week or so and just leave the cardboard on it. it will wear off. going this route i can just leave this outside............any suggestions................. Dresden Guy 24 #2 Posted March 25, 2010 I am considering doing something similar, and I found a couple of links (I'm sure there are more) that look like some good thought went into the construction. I like 24" PVC instead of Sonotube for a form, as it will not rust and if you use on dirt/soil it should last many years as you don't roll the lawn/field every week like mowing. The turning of the roller will require a good strong angle iron frame that won't buckle or bend. I like the idea of a crossbar close to the roller for self-cleaning. Ohio Steel in Columbus, Ohio makes many rollers and have owner's manuals on line that could be used for design ideas. Here's the two links....there are probably many great ideas on RS too!
