rjr 0 #1 Posted March 22, 2010 I am restoring the mower deck on my C-101. It is coming apart fairly easily but the center pulley is stuck. I am afraid to use a gear puller because the pulley does not look strong enough. I was hoping that the two 1/4" holes might be the answer but they are not threaded so I can't screw in a couple of bolts and have it pop off. Any suggestions? Helmer 0 #2 Posted March 22, 2010 I made my own puller. I used 6" X 1" X 3/8 bar, drilled two 1/4" clearance holes to match the holes in the pulley, drilled and tapped a 3/8-24 hole in the center of the bar. Then I used two long 1/4 bolts and was able to get a nut under the holes inside the pulley, used the center bolt to pull the pulley off. I think I had to use something to to cover the center hole in the spindle shaft. Got the job done and no damage to the pulley. You might be able to do the same thing with one of the small automotive steering wheel pullers.
rjr 0 #3 Posted March 22, 2010 Thanks for the reply. I looked to see if I could do the same thing but I can't because the smaller pulley underneath is covering the bottom of the holes. I thought it was a stepped pulley but it looks like they are separate. Maybe I can use a screwdriver as a wedge and pry it off.
rjr 0 #4 Posted March 22, 2010 Helmer Your 101 is in much better shape than mine...but I am working on it!
WH854 45 #5 Posted March 22, 2010 I took the grease fitting out of the shaft used a spare nut I had screwed the nut down a ways, used a good hard piece of wood layed it on nut, gave it a good whack with a big hammer.Use PBblaster on it to, Let it set for awhile,Put some heat to it, not to hot though just warm it up,seems to draw Pbblaster in.Worked for me. If i remember right the spindle shaft will go out the bottem side, Check it out first. Chas
Helmer 0 #6 Posted March 22, 2010 Chas method works for the spindles that slide out the bottom. Remember there is the key in the keyway that will hold things up. With a real tight pulley you can move the shaft down until the key gets in the way. What I did for that was to use a tapered wedge under the pulley and tap the shaft down, then slide the wedge in further, tap the shaft down again, slide the wedge in. each cycle you are moving the pulley up the shaft a little. Be patient and don't use your biggest hammer.. rjr let' see some pictures of your 101. Mine was tired and neglected until I got bit by the bug. Now she's shaping up and looking good. Now working harder than ever. :omg:
rjr 0 #7 Posted March 22, 2010 I should have taken pictures before I started taking things apart. I was looking at it yesterday just sitting there in my driveway. Gorgeous day. Next thing you know the deck was off and in pieces. I threw a $200.00 bid on Ebay with a few hours to go. Never thought I would be the winner! Wife is ready to kill me. Don1977 605 #8 Posted March 22, 2010 The formed steel pulleys need to be replaced after a few years anyway. Mine got so bad a couple years ago that they would slip in thick grass. I had a set of the old cast iron pulleys that I had machined to fit the new spindles.
