Audioshot 2 #1 Posted March 18, 2010 I have a quick question. When I put my PTO back together and fired up the mower deck, the PTO now has an annoying squeal when it engages. It's not the belt or bearings and the friction plate is not worn that bad. It's pretty brief, maybe one second long until the mower blades get up to speed. It never did this before and the only thing I'm thinking is I did spray the pulley bell face and friction disc with brake cleaner to remove debris and oils. Is this normal on these tractors? bk-scouter 93 #2 Posted March 18, 2010 Check to see if the trunnion is adjusted out far enough on the PTO engagement rod so that it applies the PTO tightly. You'll notice it when you need to apply a little more force on the PTO control handle. -BK
WheelHorse_of_course 99 #3 Posted March 18, 2010 My guess is that it is indeed due to the cleaning. Brake cleaner is right powerful stuff. I would try turning the bell by hand as the other possibility is to much drag on the driven side. You should be able to turn it fairly easily by hand when it is disnegaged. Best of luck :omg:
Duff 206 #4 Posted March 18, 2010 Audio, just a thought.....check the bearings on your deck as well. My PTO started squealing after a spell of sitting, even after I adjusted the trunnion. Turns out one of the idler pulleys had a bearing set going south - and the pulley was only a year old! Duff :D
Audioshot 2 #5 Posted March 19, 2010 Thanks, yeah, my first thought might be the deck bearings too but they were all replaced and the whole thing spins freely. I might take some emery cloth to the bell side of the PTO because when I had it apart, I did notice some slight heat scoring on the surface. It's just a slight annoyance, that's all. Thanks again. TT-(Moderator) 1,162 #6 Posted March 19, 2010 Are you engaging the PTO with the engine at full throttle? I always idle the engine down, engage the PTO slowly (but deliberately - so as not to slip too much) and then open the throttle up gradually.
Audioshot 2 #7 Posted March 19, 2010 No, I power it down to a low idle. I'm not sure what the previous owner did for 18 years, but, that may have been the case. Chris
