ezeastside 93 #1 Posted March 17, 2010 Hi Guys, I need some more help. I've been looking for a good running machine to take care of the yard detail this spring while I do some needed repairs and maybe some cosmetic work on my 520. I looked at a Tractor yesterday that would do what I'm looking. The unsure part of this is I haven't previously owned a Kohler (only the 20hp Onan) and it worries me that it has considerable top end noise. Sounds to be like noisey lifters. The motor is a M14s Magnum and from 1987. There was no hour meter on the machine (didn't come with one) so that an unknown. I can see some orange RTV sealant on the lower gasket which leads me to believe the motor has been worked on. It doesn't smoke. The current owner does not know the history as it is fairly new to him as well. The question is: Is this common for this motor? Is there adjustment to quiet this down? I really appreciate any advice on this issue. One more note on this engine. ( BTW the gentleman that owns this unit was very helpful and honest in every respect. Good Guy) While running this machine we noticed the volt meter looked high. So we put a multimeter on it and ran it. The voltage started out at about 12.5 volts but continued to slowly climb the whole time we tested it. We finally stopped the motor and shut it down and the meter had reached 17.3 volts and still climbing. What do you think? Thanks, Ed
stevebo-(Moderator) 8,409 #2 Posted March 17, 2010 Ed, Steve here in Danbury. There is a newer Toro/Wheelhorse in New Milford on CL for short money ($300) with a rough deck. It is a 312. I have a 91 416 with 700 hours that I am willing to sell for $700 if you are interested in either one, give a call. Thanks and good luck- 203 448-9310
stevebo-(Moderator) 8,409 #3 Posted March 17, 2010 Almost forgot (sorry Jeff) Fireman has a very nice and strong running C125 for shot money too. I would consider looking at that machine. Sounds like what you are looking for The 312 on CL needs choke cable, and the "clutch is sticky" so says the owner.
