CochinsRus 0 #1 Posted March 5, 2010 What is the specifications for the gap on the points for the K341 Kohler engine? I have purchase a tuneup kit that replaces the POINTS, POINTS PUSH ROD, CONDINSER, SPARK PLUG, and POINTS COVER GASKET. I also purchased a head gasket, air filter, pre filter, and an ingition switch to fix my issue when I push in the clutch that the starter wants to start every time. Hopefully all this will fix my issues.

CochinsRus 0 #4 Posted March 5, 2010 Thanks, that was quick. Where do I need to set this at. Will it be when the exhaust valve closes and the piston is at the bottom. I have the head off the engine now and I am able to tell where things are at. Just curious.

TT-(Moderator) 1,162 #7 Posted March 5, 2010 Where do I need to set this at. This is how I do it: Install the new points and slowly turn the engine over by hand until the points start to open. Continue to turn the engine over until they begin to close again. Turn the engine the opposite direction until the points are fully open and set the gap at .020". Turn the engine over a few times and recheck the gap.
gwgdog66 23 #8 Posted March 5, 2010 Thanks, that was quick. Where do I need to set this at. Will it be when the exhaust valve closes and the piston is at the bottom. I have the head off the engine now and I am able to tell where things are at. Just curious. If I'm not mistaken, it can range from .17 to .20, my book isn't readily available right now. The service manual can be downloaded Here: http://www.kohlerengines.com/onlinecatalog/pdf/tp_2379.pdf Pg 8.2 has the static timing instructions Since you have the engine opened up you can tell while spinning it by hand, where the widest gap is. Just FYI, I had to replace my flywheel last year due to a crack that I noticed in the old one around the key. I used the timing light method, after initially setting the static gap at .20. I wound up with a final gap .16 with a new set of points. I couldn't tell that it run any better or not. Now that I'm rambling on, and TT beat me to the punch .20 should get you where you need to be.
