Duff 206 #1 Posted March 3, 2010 OK, fellas, this may be the dumbest question ever asked on this forum, so I'm ready to be flamed if it is..... I've got one of my M12's cleaned up and ready to move off the work bench and onto my #2 tractor. I've completely reassembled the engine except for the air cleaner so lift points are a little hard to come by (I don't think it wise to reef on the muffler, carb, starter or the tins, but maybe I'm just being overly cautious). Will the lift strap on top of the head safely support the entre weight of the engine if I use that as my primary pick point? I replaced the head bolts with new Grade 8's and torqued them to spec. There will be two of us moving it, and I plan on using a short piece of chain suspended from an iron bar that we can both lift on. My shop doesn't have a good overhead point to rig a chain fall or block and tackle, and I don't have floor space enough to bring in a motor lifter winch thingy. A bit off-topic, but how important is the "tail brace" at the rear of the starter that supports it to the bracket off the engine? Somehow I've managed to lose this one piece of metal out of an entire pile of tractor parts! Thanks! Duff B)
Rideawaysenior 25 #2 Posted March 3, 2010 Duff, I've wondered that as well. The block is about 142lbs. I'd be a bit nervous of using that one piece for a lifting point. Jack
Jim_M 179 #3 Posted March 3, 2010 I use that single lift point every time and I've never had a problem.

Duff 206 #6 Posted March 4, 2010 Thanks, guys! I figured it was OK, but if there was some other trick or pick point I should have been using in conjucntion with the lift strap, I didn't want to take a chance on dropping and ruining the engine . Jack, I thought that engine was well over 100 # from taking it off the frame (alone - I won't make that mistake again!) even after I'd pulled off the tins, starter, carb, etc. Getting some help putting it back on for sure! Hope to have pics of a finished tractor very soon.... Still wondering about the starter tail brace, though? Thanks again to all who replied! Duff B)
Kelly 1,031 #7 Posted March 5, 2010 I think out of all the tractors I own, only one has a brace on it.
