37" twin blade deck with blade height difference

Recommended Posts

erik

I have a 37" deck. I just replaced the blades with new wheelhorse blades. I noticed that the two blades are not at the same elevation. I both blades are level, not bent or anything. Spindles look good and not bent. Everything looks to be in order.

Is there an adjustment for where the blade sits on the spindle?

Can I adjust the nut that is on the back side of the blade to move the whole set up (nut, blade, nut) down on the threaded part of the spindle? I assume the nut on the back of the blade also keeps the bearing assemble together and therefore not adjustable.

Anyone have any advice?

Can you take a pic? I have two 37" decks which I rebuilt, sold one of them. Do you have the IPL manual? What is the decm number?

Is there a washer on one spindle and not on the other. I don't have a 38" base but my base has a thin washer above the blade and a thick washer below the blade. If I get them on wrong my blades don't match either.

How much difference is there between the blades?

37" Side Discharge Mower

Model Number: 05-37SC02

The difference is about 3/16". There is no washers on either (that I remember... I'll double check) but that actually would work. I can just put a washer on the one that is low.

I can take a pic, but probably not until tomorrow.

I was thinking of giving mine a good sanding and repainting but then I starting wondering if it would be worth it. After rebuilding your decks... do you think it is worth it?

Mine is in decent shape but one of the brackets that is welded to it was tearing the deck. I just welded that up. It also has surface rust on some areas and is missing the discharge chute. I would like to get a bigger one maybe to replace this one but I only have a 312-8 so I don't know how big it can handle.

I have the same deck and there is a side to side adjustment on one of the rear wheel axles. These decks are supposed to have that thin washer between the blade and the spindle. I also welded up that lift point on mine too. Seems very common with this deck. Just remember to weld a supporting plate of steel under it to prevent it from tearing in the future.

After checking out the spindle diagram, I think I'm just going to take the time now to break down both spindles. I can check the whole setup to make sure all the parts are there. Specifically I'm worried about the "spacer-blade" no. 6. That way I can be sure it's all the way it was intended.

It is the greatest thing to have a product with that kind of support.

Thank you for your help!!

I read your second reply and noticed you are missing the discharge chute. I think I might shed some light on your deck. My deck did not the discharge chute mounted because the PO gave me the bagger with the deck. After reading about the bagger assembly (I have the original Owners Manual), it mentioned that the right blade had a bolted on flange which created increased velocity to help propel the grass into the catcher. That "wing" on the end of the blade would hit the side of the deck or it would be constantly rubbing on the grass build-up. I believe the diagram shows an optional #109916 spacer needed if you use the bagger.....I think that may be why one blade is/was lower than the other - i.e. the blade that is closet to the chute.

You will find the "bagger" blades on EBay and can even find the "flange" by itself which can replace those that wear down.

This may why one blade is lower than the other....the PO was using a bagger...thus the missing chute.

See if someone else thinks this is reason for the height difference.

After reading the last post I had to check it out myself. I actually have two of these decks and one of them was setup with the bagger. I had to run out to the garage to look at them because one has the bolt on velocity wing thingy's on the discharge blade. After close examination, both blades on both decks are the exact same cutting height.

Did you happen to install one of the blades upside down?
