K341 Governor C160

Recommended Posts

I'm having trouble getting the governor to kick in on my K341 16hp Kohler. The carb has been set and responds well. I've corrected the linkage according to the book and my other K341. Loosened the gov. arm, turned shaft counterclockwise and pulled thottle open. Tried changing holes on the governor spring. Still no luck.

What am I missing?

Any suggestions appreciated. Thanks

Start the engine and let the throttle control set at idle. Slowly move the top of the governor arm away from the carburetor using your finger/thumb and see if the governor tries to resist. (close throttle plate)

Oh oh, probably not a good sign, no resistance at idle. What's it mean, engine tear down??

Sounds like the governor gear broke. It's not too hard to replace. Got to the Kohler website and download the service and repair manual for your engine. It shows some pretty good pictures of the location of the gear.

Governor update. I've disassembled the K341. Found the governor gear off the shaft, kinda wedged between the cam gear and block. It didn't look that badly worn other than where the cam chewed it up a little. Any ideas on what would have caused it to come off? I bought a new replacement gear. Waiting on some other parts, cam shims, gaskets, cyl parts, etc.

Thanks

When I tore down my K181 the governor gear was off the shaft also. B)

I was talking to an old Kohler guy, he said maybe someone had wired the governor open or adjusted it the wrong direction causing the governor cross shaft to not hold it on. Who knows, just hope it don't happen again.

You should see a "special" Philips head screw located near the governor shaft. (on the outside of the engine block)

This screw will have a long threadless portion on the end that crosses in front of the governor gear and keeps it from coming off the stub shaft.

I agree, and i have seen this same screw bent many times.. it will cause a support problem on the gear...just double check the screw to make sure its not bent. B)

Thanks guys. I suspected that also, but when I removed it, it was nice and straight.
