xring1 2 #1 Posted February 18, 2010 B) KT17QS 24350 Well I changed the oil (engine & transmission) on my 417-A and getting ready to mount the new cab. I had it running like a top and today it started breaking up and back firing. The back fireing is intermittent . I acts like it is losing fire but the points are sparking ok when it seems to cut out for a second or 2. I checked the points and they look ok and are adjusted. Once in awhile it will catch and run smooth for a few seconds so I don't think it is timing or valves. Spark plugs are ok.. I went thru the carb adjustment the other day and like I said...was running fine.
Duff 206 #2 Posted February 18, 2010 Just a thought - any chance you got some water in your fuel somewhere along the line? This time of year that can happen pretty easily. Duff B)
Roger from southern Iowa 1 #3 Posted February 18, 2010 I'm right there with Duff on this one. Inline fuel filters may not have came from the factory, but required equipment in my barn. I prefer the clear paper type filter so I can keep track of fuel condition in my machines. Condensation is a BIG problem around here. Just my opinion.

Ok will get a filter and I suppose I should drain the carb.

gwgdog66 23 #6 Posted February 19, 2010 If it is the battery ignition, check your condenser. I had the wire break on mine and it run fine for a little while then would backfire like crazy when any type of load was applied.
Horse Rancher 0 #7 Posted February 19, 2010 If you have a decent arc across the points your condenser is shot it should have minimal arc good luck B)

Roger from southern Iowa 1 #17 Posted February 23, 2010 I figured out why your NAPA counter people are not finding that #. They are searching for it as a NAPA part #. If you can get them to look in their book/ computer in the KOHLER section they will find it. They do not list the condenser in their NAPA SME parts section of their book. Just forward of the NAPA section they have Genuine Kohler parts listed by Kohler #s. In my parts book it is on page 343...top right of the page, picture included. If you try this explanation with your local NAPA and get no results, PM me and I will get one and am willing to mail it to you. You have to be SO frustrated by now, I can't imagine. All this for a silly condenser.
