Dresden Guy 24 #1 Posted February 15, 2010 I am looking to buy a WH with a Tecumseh HH-160 170019 S/N #4121E on it. Tell me your opinion about this specific Tecumseh model. How do you compare this Tec "HH" series to the cast iron Kohlers? I need to decide what to offer this guy for this re-powered WH. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
TT-(Moderator) 1,147 #2 Posted February 15, 2010 If it's a 1-0385 C-160 8 speed, it isn't repowered. That's the engine that belongs on it. The engines are fine (and they have the better Timken tapered roller crankshaft main bearings) - just a little tougher to find parts for these days. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

Docwheelhorse 2,689 #4 Posted February 16, 2010 I think the weak spot on that big Tec is the ignition.... if they used the same electronic setup as the HH100/120 look out when it goes south.... if you can find parts at all. I also thought there might have been a problem with the overhead valve setup on that motor.... but hey if its running almost 40 years later how bad could the problem have been!!! The tractor looks in VERY good condition. Tell me about the Tecs in WH, I couldn't find it in the ID by Year tables. In your opinion, is $600 for the C-160 with the Tec + blade + SD deck a fair price? As usual, your info and expertise are ..........PRICELESS! Docwheelhorse 2,689 #6 Posted February 16, 2010 IMHO $600 is high for that tractor.... yes it has the electronic ignition in it that is darn near impossible to get parts for when and if it quits.... The fuel pumps are also NLA and impossible to find---hence the jury rigged setup. Unless your a Tecumseh nut or you just gotta have it--I wouldn't pay $600 for it, $350---$400 is more like it and what I would consider a max price. Kohler powered C160's can be had for $600 easily. Is the condition of the tractor, from what you can see in pics, a compelling enough reason to offer $400 for the tractor and blade only? I have another C-160 with a K341 on it that I would exchange since the this one is better shape than mine? Was everything else equal on the 1974 (?)Tec version? I know the tranny is the same WH 5091. Docwheelhorse 2,689 #8 Posted February 16, 2010 I can't confirm or deny its a 1974... but its a 1976 or older as they moved the gas tank out back in '77 or therabouts--somebody will correct me. The tractor looks real clean and at $350--$400 you could sell off the deck and plow and make out OK if you had too. But if that Tecumseh lets go you essentially have a really clean C series tractor that you couldn't get much for. If I was you I would park your not so nice C160 next to this one and spend a Saturday swapping the engines. Then you would have a really sweet & clean C160 with the very desireable Kohler and you could sell off the other setup while its still running. Tony Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

The PO didn't have the tractor ID label. Tony, none of the ID charts show a Tec in the C-160. But, you had the very thought I had.....a Saturday swaperoo! I already have another deck and a blade. Wheel Horse made fantastic equipement ---but--- sometimes there labeling/paperwork was off. I have seen another C160 with the Tecumseh in it from the factory... rydogg 186 #15 Posted February 16, 2010 I got one a couple weeks ago I traded a single stage snowthrower for mine, thought the tecumseh was a transplant I thought the c160 only came with kohlers. I looked into the electrical parts cause po said it had no spark they want $150 for the charge coil (stator), and about the same for the ignition coil so that was gonna be around $300, guess I got lucky when I unhooked the stator and than it had spark but I still can't get it to run right maybe a carb problem. I guess I can't say I like these motors too much compared to a kohler, I have been told to throw the tejunkseh out and get a kohler since they are easier to find parts for. Anyway heres a few pictures of my first Wheel Horse of the year. It did come with a 48" deck in great condition which will replace my 42" rusted out deck. I also got a 36" tiller. rydogg 186 #16 Posted April 29, 2010 Well I got a deal on the electrical parts so I decided to put the HH160 back together it now runs pretty good I am just having trouble with the carb it keeps "hunting" at low rpms but runs great at wot, it also needs some electrical work when I plug in the stator/charge coil it looses spark when the key is turned on but not when the key is turned off Can I run this with the stator unplugged without causing any damage to the electrical system?
