Position of snow blower belt on PTO drive

I just purchased a snow blower model 79360 for my horse. The blower is made for the Classic wheel horse tractors. I have it mounted on my dad's 1257. I mounted the quick hitch to the front of the tractor and hooked up the blower. It'a all ready to go except I don't know which belt grove to run the belt in on the PTO 6. Is it the larger grove the one that's closest to the engine or the smaller one that is towards the outer part of the pto unit.

I run mine on the inside groove, a little extra speed that way.

Technically it is supposed to go in the outside groove but like nylyon said, it works in the inner too.

The reason for the question is I had the belt in the outer grove of the PTO pulley

and it seemed ok. However the blower didn't seem to want to through the snow very far. I know this is a wet snow and probably doesn't work very well. Another thing I noticed is the inside of the blower seems to be rusty. I used a wire brush to remove some of the rust the best I could. I read here in the forms that coating the inside of the blower and auger with Por 15 would leave a slick and smooth finish. Just wondering if perhaps this would help as well. I was wondering if perhaps changing the pulley on the blower to a little smaller pulley if perhaps this would help speed up the auger and help remove the snow from the shute and help aid in the blower from becoming cloged. I throttled the engine up to high rpm and moved very slowely almost to a creaping stand still and it still wants to clog. Perhaps someone may have some sugestions to help aid in this problem. I am wondering if perhaps when these blowers were new and all painted up, if they had as much of a problem cloging.

I have seen times where going too slow would cause the blower to clog. How deep is the snow? Make sure you are running at full throttle.

the one good snofall we had my blower was plugging up also,very wet and heavy,i think as the blowers get worn in the space between the auger and the shell increases and the blower doesnt work as well and yes paint and some kind of wax or cookong spray might help,some people reduce the size of the pulley on the blower to make it spin faster.

I tried the Pam cooking spray and it worked pretty good. I believe for the most part I have a pretty nice blower. Considering that this is a very wet snow and it had laid on the ground for a while. I believe most of my problem was not opening up the throttle and getting the RPM up on the blower. I plan on repainting the blower. Inside the shoot and the auger box and the auger, I am going to use the POR-15 product. That should give me a very rock hard type of coating and its very slick as well. I can see that I probably will want to change out the rear end this summer for a two speed. By changing to a two speed,it should slow down the ground speed of the tractor so I don't have the ride the drive belt as much and prevent of over crowding the blower. Thanks to all for your feed back for the small problem that I was having. I just need some time to get to know this blower.

@Daniel:

The 1257 uses a PTO pulley that's a little smaller than the ones on the newer models that your thrower was designed for.

If you intend to continue using the thrower on the 1257, you probably should install a smaller jackshaft pulley on the thrower to get the auger up to "full" speed.

You may also want to verify that the engine is operating at the maximum recommended no-load RPM. (

I agree. I have experienced the same with my single stage thrower on the Horse and with a small 2 stroke toro single stage thrower.

I used to have to run up and down the driveway with the toro to get the snow to fly. Now I just just change gears B)

Seems like single stages like a nice solid continuous feed of snow in order to throw it.

Just purchased an 8 speed low range rear end for the 1257. I'm looking into replacing the jackshaft pulley as well. I was wondering if perhaps the PTO unit was of different size or if perhaps someone had changed the jackshaft pulley on the blower at one time or another. I had it out today playing in the snow it seemed to be doing ok, but I believe it can be improved upon. I had somewhere of about 28" of snow drifts in front of my home and the blower seemed to be playing PacMan. Just gobbling up the snow as it went. I know the two stage blowers seem to be great on the really wet snows but for the most part, I believe the blower worked ok considering the present set up that I have at this time. Does anyone have in recomindations for what size pulley I should try on the jackshaft of the blower to get it up to speed?

I put a 4" pulley on my blower and it made quite a difference in the way it worked, also had to go to a 1" shorter belt also. Good luck

Thanks Wingrider, I measured across the pulley and it measures 5 1/2". I will try your advice. I'll start looking for a 4" pulley. B)
