k161 kohler piston

Recommended Posts

hi, i have a 633 that has a k161 according to number on blower housing. it ran good, but smoked a little. its down for a restore. bore is good, but it needs rings. piston is borderline. it is standard bore. i found standard n.o.s. kohler piston for a k161. part#230103. however, my piston part number is stamped #234939. i will say that my engine block is grey, and may be a replacement engine. i dont know if there is a part number change, or if i may have a different engine. i have several k181's and it looks the same. anyone have any input, or a book to check part number#230103? A K-161 on a 633 is definitely a replacement engine. (it should have a K-141)

What size is the bore?

If the tag is still attached to the blower cover... take the spec number over to OPEEngines.com and perform a search on that number. It will give you where the motor came from and give you the correct old and new part number for the piston.

That would make it a newer K-161 or a K-181 ~ depending on the stroke.

You should be able to get rings for either engine as long as you know whether it's an old style piston or the new Mahle piston. (Mahle pistons normally have thinner compression rings and a different design of oil control ring)

If you have access to a cooperative Kohler dealer with a decent inventory, (locally) you could always take your piston there and match up the ring set. I do that a lot with engines I have no spec number for.

Tag numbers on blowers housings don't mean anything unless you are positive that nothing's been swapped. Running the numbers at Kohler's or OPE's site will definitely tell you what the blower housing is off of, but what if it's on a replacement long block or different engine?

THANKS FELLOWS. I KNOW THE BLOWER HOUSING MAY HAVE BEEN CHANGED. BUT, WITH THE BORE, AT 2.937IN, K161 OR K181 PISTON WILL WORK. AM I RIGHT? I SEARCHED KOHLER AND THEY LIST A #230103 PISTON FOR A K161 ENGINE. MY QUESTION IS. ANY BODY FAMILIAR WITH PISTON #230103 CROSSED TO #234939. THANKS TO ALL . JIMMY
