xring1 2 #1 Posted February 9, 2010 Ok figured I needed to start a new thread for this and other stuff I might run into. Kohler KT17QS series II......... No spark.......It had weak intermittent spark when I went to get it and I figured it was the weak battery but with a good battery I am seeing no spark now. Ideas ???? IthacaJeff 151 #2 Posted February 9, 2010 Xring, Fuses and ground wires, fuses and ground wires. Check 'em all. Don't just check that the fuses are blown, but check how they seat in the fuse holders. It took me about a year to finally find that it was poor connections in a fuse holder that prevented ignition starting. I spent a year hot-wiring the starter to get my Kohler M10 started. xring1 2 #3 Posted February 9, 2010 I had another idea.... I do not have a manual for this tractor but are there any safety switches that would shut off spark?

xring1 2 #5 Posted February 9, 2010 Is there an online engine manual for this thing? Where are the points and what should they be set at?

pfrederi 18,660 #9 Posted February 9, 2010 There are safety switches.... First check for voltage at the coil with the key turned on and the PTO fully disengaged. No voltage = ignition switch, safety switch/wiring issue Voltage but no spark check the points under cover on top of engine towards front starting setting would be .020...but check for corrosion first.... jtmoyer 1 #10 Posted February 9, 2010 i seamed to have a short in my 417. i ran a lead from the pos post of the battery to the pos post of the coil. just what the doc ordered. clip the wire on the battery when i want to use it and take it off when i am finished using it. don't know what the prob was but it fixed its self over time. my 417 sat for 12 years outside before i got it. xring1 2 #11 Posted February 9, 2010 B) Ok then..... I am only 1/2 a mechanic but got it running. Found the points, cleaned and checked gap. Had to nurse it along for awhile dribbling gas into the carb but eventually it ran by itself. Now it does not like to stay at an idle.... it will idle for a bit then surge up and then come back down....Any ideas here? While It was running it is charging ok and I checked the hoist ram and it is functioning. An oil gauge would have been a nice thing to have. I can't check the drive till I get a spindle on. The forward/reverse lever seems stuck on place. anything I need to know about it or do I just go exploring and see if it is hung up from sitting? The screws in the top of the fuel pump were REALLY loose and it was leaking gas pretty bad. Surprised the previous owner did not catch it on fire.

xring1 2 #14 Posted February 10, 2010 Glad to hear you got it fired up. Did you find a spindle yet? Jason Did a quick check on Ebay last night and no spindle. If all else fails I will rob one off the c-125 to be able to check and see if the transmission works. Guess I will pull the carb off tomorrow and clean it to see if I can get it to stay at an idle
