K181 Swap??

Hi all,

I'm trying to help a fellow RS member out.

Will the parts - flywheel, pulley, etc. off a starter/gen engine swap over to a gear drive starter engine. The old K181 is toast and I believe mine to be pretty solid yet. Mine appears to be off a newer WH tractor, possibly a B or C series.

Was wondering if I could get a general answer w/o getting down to the Spec #'s, etc. ?

In short -Yes.

The early engines used a smaller blower housing, so you will have to change the flywheel-side crankcase cover (bearing plate) and also install the two tall cylinder head studs for the upper S/G bracket, but everything physically bolts on.

the k181 bearing did not vary in size only the m8 had a larger platr

the variations in the k181 depended if it was a starter generator

magneto under the flywheel or the newer gear drive starter with

the alternator under the flywheel like TT said they will all interchange :party: B)

There are definitely two different size bearing plates on the K's.

Regardless of the ignition type, the early engines were either recoil start or had a starter/generator. (smaller plate and blower housing) The bearing plate had no relief for a gear-drive electric starter.

In the late 60's (1968?) when the gear drive starter was introduced, the plate and blower housing was slightly enlarged to accommodate the ring gear.

The early blower housing will not fit over the larger bearing plate.

The M8 has a totally different bearing plate with an integral starter mount and the mounting posts for the magneto. The blower housing and cooling tins are unique to the Magnum.
