VinsRJ 721 #1 Posted February 6, 2010 This Clinton B1290 originally came off of a National Reel Mower which my brother located sitting behind a shed at a golf course. After talking to the manager my brother learned that the machine was barely, if ever used, because of the electric starter. If it stalled on the

clintonnut 126 #8 Posted February 6, 2010 Very nice Vince! It seems stupid to not just convert an engine like that back to recoil if it didn't work well. I'm happy that you had great success on both of your Clintons. I am in need of some more B1290s and 498s to rebuild and sell. Here is an air compressor a Wheel Horse buddy gave me and I mounted the same starter on mine. My starter was NOS!! Charlie
dclarke 4,011 #9 Posted February 6, 2010 don't know how you could improve on that. that's really nice vince!

VinsRJ 721 #13 Posted February 7, 2010 Thanks for all your nice comments. I really enjoyed this project... just enough work to pick at but nothing to indepth where major dollars had to be spent. I sold the gas tank and oil bath air cleaner off it and bought a couple parts from Charlie and some paint... all said and done I'm a head about $40 on this motor. Charlie Charlie question: When the motor is running does the electric starter motor also spin? Or is the starter clutch suppose to keep the starter from spinning while the engine is running? Thanks BTW I have had my eyes pealed for 1200s or 1290s and nothing.....
clintonnut 126 #15 Posted February 7, 2010 It shouldn't spin with the engine. Charlie
stevebo-(Moderator) 8,060 #16 Posted February 7, 2010 Vince, You are the man when it comes to restoring these little motors !! Your work is too good to actually use it so I guess you should just have me come pick it up and put it on my 55 I need to get my 1290 going and set it on the 55. I need the tune up parts still. buckrancher 2,678 #17 Posted February 7, 2010 Hey Vin you could always mount a hose reel and a super long extention cord on the back for when you stall it

VinsRJ 721 #19 Posted February 7, 2010 Thanks guys..... Attached is a not so good pic of the three engines that I have completed in the last 4 or 5 months. The black motor on the left is a Kohler K161es which is the orignal motor to my Panzer, it was completely rebiult by me. The Clinton in the middle is the original Clinton 1200 from my RJ58 and was also completely rebiult. And the Clinton on the right is the B1290 I just completed. I do have another NOS Fairbanks recoil for the B1290 should I get tired of the electric starter.... Attached Image
DoctorHfuhruhurr 136 #20 Posted February 7, 2010 Very nice .... I like the starter on it even with it's potential draw backs. You could always mount a self contained tiny portable generators to the front like this one http://www.walmart.com/ip/Wagan-Power-Dome...erator/10928428 and you'd be able to start it anytime anywhere with AC power. MikesRJ 552 #24 Posted February 16, 2010 I'll take a crack at this one: Line mimicking "Oddball" (Sutherland) in "Kelly's Heroes" (1970): Staring Eastwood, Sutherland, O'Connor, Rickles, Savalas, etc. ... and I believe the line was ... Tony and I went to middle and high school together...... and Central Conn for a couple years. Actually Tony and I have a ton of memories between Chevy Novas, Indoor Track Meets, ect..... One of the best is when my brother high jacked Tony's grandfather's Nova and started doing power brakes in front of my parent
