Where is this noise coming from?

When my Electro is trying to get traction I hear a squall which sounds like a belt. Is it the belt? I thought the belt ran the hydro and the hydro ran the wheels. If it is the belt does anyone know the no. for it?

7478 is the part number for the belt and yes - they can slip. Check the tension of the belt when the parking brake lever is in the "released" position. It won't be extremely tight, but it shouldn't be "floppy" either.

It is also possible that the noise you are hearing is the fluid bypassing a relief valve within the hydro unit. This noise will occur more often when trying to pull an immovable object or when trying to push too much with a dozer blade, etc.

It doesn't normally occur when there is wheel slippage though.

Not to sound silly about it., but i would check that hydro oil....

then the brake make sure the brake is not locked up....

its just me but i allways check the simple things first....

it could even be a bad idler bearing....

Checking the oil level is a great idea, but I would hope someone would do that before posting on a forum. (but you never know )

It could be the valve because when it happens the wheels are trying to move but don't. Would it be normal for it to happen when you are trying to move snow or plowing in the garden. Seems when I have weights on the wheels and trying to work it a little hard it happens. I would not say I am trying to do something really hard. Looks like it should never do it trying to push snow.

Is the noise similar to what you would hear on a car/truck with power steering when you turn the wheel all the way one direction and hold it there?

Have you inspected the belt for cracks or possibly even chunks missing out of the belt? Inquiring minds want to know. Sound coming from the left rear or right rear?

You can check the drive belt and the woodruff keys in the axles/hubs, but it sure sounds like the relief valve to me.

The spring may have weakened with age and is now letting the fluid bypass at a lower pressure than the original "setting".

Do you agree that it should not release moving snow with 50lbs weights? Looks like you should lose traction way before the valve releases. Is it common for the spring to get weak. The tractor is over 40. Some off my springs are getting weak at 42.

Yes - it should push snow (wheel weights or not) and not bypass unless the wheels can't turn (slip) and the system pressure exceeds the relief valve setting.
