420lse 18 #1 Posted February 6, 2010 I was talking with Tony (Doc) many moons ago and was explaining how my 655 was killing batteries. He said that without a doubt it was faulty diodes. Seeing Cas's thread on his H 60 charging problems got me feeling like I should finally get around to fixing my own stuff. Gotta stop procrastinating. Anyway, I went to rshack and picked up some diodes, $1.65 for 2 and went to work, even though I felt like procrastinating I didn't want to butcher my present setup so I grabbed a couple of fuses and started measuring. I broke the glass from the fuses and cleaned them out, cut the diode ends and sodered them in. Seemed like a pretty cool fix. I'll check the charging system tommorrow. Guess I could have made them a little longer. Moe in CT

whfan74 2,071 #3 Posted February 6, 2010 Looks good to me.........will be interested in hearing if it did the trick for you. Nice job and seems to hopefully be a very inexpensive fix. B)

420lse 18 #7 Posted February 6, 2010 which diodes where these? great ideal!! I have to give Mr Ed Stoller credit for this fix. Go to the bottom area of this thread and it explains the diode concept. I simply added the fuse ends so I could more easily replace them if needed. Plus he explains how to check your system. It's a good read. http://home.earthlink.net/~edstoller/id11.html I did check the old diodes and they were toast. After I put the fuse ends on the new diodes, I checked them and they were working properly. I took the 655 for a ride and the diode replacment worked great. I didn't get to check my system with the multi meter (too damn cold today) but when I put my battery minder back on the battery, it was fully charged. Usually it's so drained it takes a few minutes to come to a full charge .
Save Old Iron 1,571 #8 Posted February 6, 2010 Moe, Check out http://www.aboveboardelectronics.com/keyel...copy/prod25.htm These are flexible vinyl covers which keep dirt and dust and direct splashes off the fuses and diodes. They should work now that your diodes are more "fuse-like" in appearance. B)
