rustynut 4 #1 Posted February 6, 2010 Would it be ok to just put a straight pipe my wheel horses or would that tear up the vavles?
jpmcleod 4 #2 Posted February 6, 2010 I have straight pipes on two of my Kohlers with stand=up mufflers and rain flaps. They look great and sound godd. I have two other tractors with B&S twins with straight pipes and mufflers. I would not run them without the mufflers. I have always been told to run mufflers because cold air hits the hot valves when you shut off the engine and warps the valves. As one would say, just my 2 cents worth. hotrodmerc 1 #3 Posted February 6, 2010 I ran a 8" straight pipe on mine for years without issue. I did change it because I didn't like all the noise.
rustynut 4 #4 Posted February 6, 2010 So you think if it's just A straight pipe the vavles would probly go out
hotrodmerc 1 #5 Posted February 6, 2010 They are quite noisy with a straight pipe. I had no valve problems with mine after running the straight pipe for several years.

6wheeler 669 #7 Posted February 6, 2010 Well for my 1-1/3 cents worth, I have never heard the cold air rushing in theory. But, it does sound good, as with every internal combustion engine, the name of the game is back pressure, it should breath well but needs some (bp) the problem is they can lean out to the point where they burn pistons or valves. Depending on the leanout, you may have to re-jet your carb. Some engines are choked out with too much (bp), so opening the exhaust can be beneficial. Sometimes you can fix the problem simply by putting a couple of screws in the side of the straight pipe and it gives just enough (bp). And yes it does sound cool.... and loud... What did you say? LOUD PIPES SAVE LIVES... Pat
