jimbotelho 1 #1 Posted February 3, 2010 I was wondering how much work is it to swap a 17hp2 cyl kohler in my c175 to a 14/16single kohler. Is their a lot to change ? wiring the same? any help would be great I have a good running engine but nervous because it has a non pressure oil system. thanks Jim
truckin88 104 #2 Posted February 3, 2010 Jim, Any K / Magnum series from a WH, should bolt to the frame. I also provided you with a single cylinder rubber mount engine plate for the blackhoods, if you want to use that I think you need a shorter oil pan (someone chime in). I would just watch the oil level. I only put 1/2 hour on after getting it from Steve, he never had issues nor did I. The reason I put the hour meter on was to remind myself to check the oil. Every issue with those KT motors was either the machine was rolled or the machine was run low on oil. It is not a bad idea to have a single on the shelf next to that plate as an insurance policy. The wiring is not that complex on them, And I think you would just want the ignition wiring from what ever tractor you get as a donor. The only advantages doing this now, would be piece of mind (but any engine can blow at any time)...and would be you will get $$$ for it in it's current state. A KT series 2 out of a 417 would be ideal as the kohler twins do sound nice.
rickv1957 75 #3 Posted February 3, 2010 That KT17 will go a long time, just watch mowing the sidehills as that is where a lot of engines have had problems,Rick
Uncle BO 0 #4 Posted February 3, 2010 jimbo just keep the oil level good and use, it if it breaks then repair or replace that is why you have the extra WH if you need one we know where to get one or two he would not miss them. bro "BO"

Save Old Iron 1,571 #6 Posted February 3, 2010 This is a post which I am interested in. I do plan to implant a 16hp K engine onto a C175 frame later this year. Anyone have a list of HARDWARE items I would need to accomplish this? Wiring is no problem for me. My questions would be for hardware changes. 1/ does the drive pulley end up in the same position as the 17hp motor drive pulley ?? So I can use the same drive belt on a 16hp K ? 2/ Do I need to change from the drive belt guard supplied for the C175 to one designed for the K engine series ? I noticed this when looking under the parts list for the C175. It seems the belt guards are listed as different #'s for the 175 vs the 165. in advance
Horse Rancher 0 #7 Posted February 4, 2010 we have done this already I don't remember changing the gaurd though I thought it was a straight up swap (to many projects to remember) I will check it out and let you know B)
Save Old Iron 1,571 #8 Posted February 4, 2010 Jim & Dan I would have thought the belt guards would have been an even up swap. Its the 2 separate parts #'s on the Toro site that prompted me to ask. Thanks

Thanks chuck you sure it is not the blower belt guard you are seeing, to allow a belt to run to the back to get rear pto power....there was one on my C-175 that Jimbo got. Save Old Iron 1,571 #10 Posted February 4, 2010 Will, good point - never thought of that I'll do additional snooping around. I will try to find a manual for the vacuum attachment to see if they mention adding the belt guard. thanks

clintonnut 126 #12 Posted February 6, 2010 I should be a "bolt" in swap. Most engine manufactures have standards to cranshaft placement and size as well as engine base plate bolt patterns. The only thing you should have to do is modify the wiring although not much. You will need a different muffler too.... Good Luck! Charlie
mnWHfan 47 #13 Posted February 6, 2010 If you do want to swap in a K341 into a C175, you can go to the Toro site and look at the assembly drawings for the C175 and the C165 and see what parts are different. My parents have a 1981 C175 with a series 1 KT17 engine in it that I just rebuilt last year with about 2500 hours on it. Their yard has a few 40-45 degree side hills along the street and the driveway and it didn't seem to be a problem until near the end. At the end, it would take about a quart of oil to mow 2 acres. They are a good engine, so if it runs good I would use it. They are a nice sounding engine.
