FarmerJim 5 #1 Posted February 3, 2010 Hi everyone! first time poster here on R.S. I have been lurking for a long time and want everyone to know what a great site this is! I have a 1970 Raider 12 I am attempting to restore that came without an engine. a co-worker gave me a k 301s 1966 vintage to rebuild and put on it. upon teardown I discovered a dime size chunk busted out of the lower cylinder. The piston does not travel down that far but my question is will a machine shop even attempt to bore this or am I wasting my time? farmerjim
Confused99 2 #2 Posted February 3, 2010 I would think they would still bore it for you. The void in your cylinder would be no different then the ports on a 2 stroke. Jason

Kelly 1,033 #4 Posted February 3, 2010 First and you know that engine is a starter gen engine, and yours should be a gear drive starter with the charging system under the flywheel, you can convert it over. And as to the chunk missing at one point I'd say the engine broke a rod and that took the chunk out, I would grind the edges of the broken spot smooth so no stress cracks form, if it's not too bad they should bore it for you
FarmerJim 5 #5 Posted February 3, 2010 Thanks to everyone that replied. I know machine shops are kind of funny about the work they take on sometimes, but I knew if I asked you guys, you would set me straight before I had the embarrassment of showing up and hearing them laugh. To Kelly: Yes I knew this was the wrong starter set up but has anyone seen a Raider or newer tractor with the old start/gen on it? Is it even possible to mount that set up and get the hood to close Once again thanks and please bear with me while I learn to navigate this site

My brother has a 1968 Raider 10 with a 1965 241 Kohler.
W9JAB 156 #9 Posted February 3, 2010 J B weld work good!
Ken B 3,189 #10 Posted February 3, 2010 Not too sure about J B weld these days. I used to use this stuff all the time for certain repairs and it was good and strong and cured solid overnight. This summer I bought some and it was garbage. It took days too partially cure and even then, it sucked. (Yes I mixed it properly) I even bought another batch at a different parts store, still junk. A few guys I know had the same complaints as me. One guy I know even got ahold of someone at JB Weld and asked whats going on. They told him they changed the formula too something new and improved. Yeah right! Has anyone bought any lately and was it any good? I don't feel like wasting more money. Welcome Farmer Jim!
FarmerJim 5 #11 Posted February 4, 2010 Thanks again to all of you!It will be a couple days before I can get it to the shop.I'll keep you posted as to what happens. By way of introduction, My name is Jim and I live in Northern Indiana about 20 miles south east of South Bend. I was born and raised on Wheel Horse as my Dad and Granddad had horses for as long as I was around. I inherited Gramp's raider 12 and then Dad's c-100 (which was in almost showroom condition) funny thing about life though, several years back my son was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes and my wife with cancer. Great news both are doing fine but had to sell the horses for bills. The raider I'm rebuilding now I'm going through bolt by bolt kind of in memory of my Dad and gramps. So I'm glad i found this place full of nice folks and I'll probably be leaning on all of you to make this dream come true!.
