help Fuel pump K301 (C-120)

Recommended Posts

truckin88

So my K301 in my C-120 runs great. I replaced the fuel line, ran great, line between carb and pump ran great. So then I took the pump off and replaced the fuel pump gasket casue I bought 2 for my C-100 and this one, replaced, put it back on, tightened it down....and nada, will not run, used some starting fluid in the carb, nothing.....HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I did notice the fuel filter is dry now. I put it in the way it came out, the lines were still connected, I just cleaned the old gasket and put the new gasket one.

Thanks,

Will

Like Rick said is the first thing is to disconnect the line that goes into the carb and crank it over. If you are pulling fuel then it is something else. If no, you may be vapor locked and the fix is to crank it over and hold your hand over the carb with the choke OFF. Becareful that you do not burn your hand if the carb blows back but that is the same thing that happened to me on the 314. It will prime the carb and get the fuel flowing.

I have had this happen to my C-160 before. Somehow the air gremlin gets in the fuel line. Pull the line loose going into the carb, like Rick suggested. crank it over a few times, and it should prime itself back up. Why they do this I

make sure that the rocker arm on the fuel pump is on the right side of the lob,and sometimes u can get an air lock in the pump,i put my compressor air line and pressureize the fuel tank to push the fuel into the pump, works sometimes

Do you have spark?

You have fuel going to the carb now, and still not firing?

Do you have spark at the plug?

Looks like no spark....I put a bolt in the wire end and grounded it.....no sparks....dead battery??? Everyrthing worked before screwing with the pump...

Here is the plan for tomorrow after work..

Gas down the cylinder...new plug...jump start it...see what happens....

Any other ideas??? It worked today I swear.

She does turn, the crank and flywheel go like normal never fires though.

take the points cover off and clean them with very fine sandpaper. if that is not it you may have a bad coil??

No spark? Try what Stevebo said on the points. Check tho make sure the wire coming from the points to the coil isn't broke or loose. Make sure the condensor wire didn't come off somehow also.

I failed to mention this earlier . You can also loosen up the carb bowl nut and make sure fuel is geting into the carb.

plug is wet too, so I don't think gas delivery is a problem....

Don't spray anything on the points, they need to be dry. Remove the cover, dry with compressed air. You can lightly sand the contacts, but if they're pitted get new don't forget a new condenser as well. Check the gap .020 I believe.

Once that is done, you already have fuel and power to the + side of the coil, if you still don't have spark, check the wire from the points to the - side of the coil. If everything is good and still no spark, it points to a bad coil. I'm guessing on the points myself.

I checked the wire before I left to work today, it looked ok. If I have to replace 14 ga automotive wire good enough? I still think the points are wet with gas as it is right next to the fuel pump, gas went every where when I replaced the line between the pump and carb.

Wet plug means the carb is getting gas to the engine correct? As I dried it, retried and she came out wet again.

Thanks

-Will

Yes. If the plug is wet with gas, the fuel problem is solved. Get a new plug too in case the fuel has fouled it.

FIXED:

On my way home stopped by advanced picked up some autolite 216's (Champ H10 equiv) good to have a few extra when you have a few of these kohler around.

Didn't do anything, tried it, same as last night, quick gap of the new plug to .025, swapped the plugs, a few turns of the key and she is alive......thanks to all, I guess the old plug was just fouled beyond a wipe down....
