WHICH MODEL D SERIES IS THE BEST? ARE ALL OF THEM HYDROSTAT? WHAT DO YOU NEED TO LOOK OUT FOR WHEN BUYING ONE? I WANT 3PT HITCH AND PTO. WILL APPRECIATE ANY INFO. whfan74 2,071 #2 Posted January 28, 2010 Well if you are wanting a rear PTO I would look for the 18 or 20 horse in my opinion. The D 250's are a great machine but a little bit harder to find parts for as they are a Renault 4 cylinder engine. If you have a chance to test one out make sure to let the hydro warm up a bit. Then as you would with a C series run it up a hill to make sure the hydro is strong for you. Steering in these beasts are usually pretty sloppy. The tighter the steering the better. There will be others along with more info than what I have for you. They can be a fun tractor to do some work with. Remember the turning radius isn't as tight as what you will find on your C Series. tookies 0 #4 Posted January 30, 2010 I have 3 D 180s. One is really nice and pretty original. The other is in good shape and I am currently swapping engines on it. The third is a parts tractor. Besides the hydro one thing thats often overlooked when your looking to buy one is the steering and its linkages. 2 out of the 3 have messed up steering. WH made the D series too heavy for the steering system it has in it. The spindle assembly is often times bent. In mine its been the spindle assembly. With others I have read its the steering column. I dont think one with a good hydro/engine and bad steering is a deal killer but be prepared to have to tear down the front end. The good part is they (Ds) are really not that hard to work on and they are really a heavy tractor that once straightened out are a blast to drive. You have to remember your buying a 30+ year old machine that (for most of them) has been "abused" beyond "abused" either by just plain old wear and tear or simple neglect caused by being left to sit and rot in a damp garage or yard. bitten 134 #7 Posted January 31, 2010 I would say just check it over like others have said. Be prepared to do some work on it if you get a really used one. I got my D200 with tiller and snow blower for a really really good deal but I have had to do some work and put some money in it. Something not said is to check the PTO. Mine was in really bad shape and it did cost some $$ to fix. When you get one that runs like it is supposed to you will have a worker that cant be beat without going to a big money machine.
