Tutorial - Troubleshooting by Multimeter

Here's what I propose.

A combination picture book / schematic diagram of all the major electric / electronic devices in the wheel horse tractors - each with a real live picture of what to check and how to check it with a multimeter. The demystification guide is a great tool but sometimes its is difficult to partner up a real world device to how its represented on a schematic. We can address that here.

I may need some help with certain parts such as generators or electric clutches as far as grabbing pics with meters attached to them in the proper spots. I just do not have pre - ABC series tractors I can photograph myself.

If everyone is willing to contribute what they can as far as the occasional digital picture, we can probably put many questions to rest on how to systematically troubleshoot some of the more common problems.

Let me know. I think it may be worthwhile.

I know almost nothing about the electrical system and need to be slowly shown how to use the instruments, it would be a really great learning how-to for me, go for it.

I say go for it Chuck. That sounds like a BIG project. It would be invaluable help to a lot of us. I do not have a -pre- tractor but if you need a 417A picture I'll do what I can. Good luck!!.......and W9JAB....you better keep your probe at home :thumbs:

I voted yes even though squirrels are one of the biggest enemies in electricity transmission and distributions. OTOH, many squirrels have given their lives to plunge us into darkness.

Anyway, what format will this guide take? It seems like something that could best be done via a Wiki. Does RS have the capability and desire to host a Wiki or is there a suitable Wiki we could add to?

I'd find it helpful! I'm a Mechanical Engineer with just enough lack of electrical knowhow to blow components and electrocute myself when using a multimeter.

I'm in...the pictures would be worth a thousand words. Gees the tree rats are every where!!!!

I've never had so much fun as when I climbed a telephone pole (that was my job) and have a tree rat mosey toward me along a telephone cable. I would reach out and grab the cable and start to swing it around in circles. They don't fall off...but what a riot watching them trying to hang on.

No squirrels where hurt during this exercise....no linemen either. :thumbs:

I think it would be worth while to show the right way to check out the electrical components. It would answer a lot of question that come up on the board.

Thanks Gene, we will count on your help for some of the older stuff. Myself, I don't have anything older than a C160 but all the theory is the same anyhow.

Seeing a problem such as a bad solenoid in real life, then on a schematic and then in an animated computer graphic may give the best clue as to how to troubleshoot the issue. That's the direction I think we need to head.

I think that if you showed checking a bad component and then show checking a good one it would clear up a lot. It may take help from other members to come up with all the bad parts to test.

Chuck I have a 1055 that I'd put towards the cause thats the oldest one I have thats running I do have a 1054 thats I'm gonna get rewired this summer also if that will help. Both are starter/gen tractors
