tbbahner 28 #1 Posted January 28, 2010 Hey all, Springs just around the corner! NOT! Supposed to get snow again here in Ks. Anyway, I'm going through a 48" SD Deck Mod. 5-1210 9. Don't know what the 9 means. The parts list on the Toro site only lists the spindle assembly. I'm trying to find out what the bearings would cross over to at local parts stores. The top one is a sealed bearing, the lower is a smaller roller/needle bearing. I did find a # on the top bearing - BENBEARCO 9R-12. Nothing on the smaller bearing. These are non-zerk fitted shafts, with the cast pulleys. Beats the heck out of me how you're supposed to keep grease to the lower bearing, as its not a sealed bearing. They were dryer than popcorn flatulant air mover. Anyway, if anyone has gone through one of these, any help would be appreciated. As a side note, this deck has the TachAmatic hardware on it w/o the pulleys like found on the Raiders, etc. Uses mule drive. Again, thanks for any help. Operator 7 #2 Posted January 28, 2010 Can't help with numbers here , never had to rebuild one - yet. But something I did learn from a mechanic is to peel out the plastic seal on the bearings facing to each other that way when you grease the spindles the grease gets to the rollers and balls better. It makes sense to me, hope it helps! Randy
tarcoleo 119 #3 Posted January 28, 2010 This may be one of those deals where you might have to drill and tap a hole in the housings to allow a grease fitting to lube the assembies. Great idea about removing the bearing seal to provide grease to same. But drilling and tapping a hole in the shaft if the shaft is hardened could be a problem. I thought all 48" WH decks had grease fittings. Both of mine do. Good luck Randy! Tom in RI
Old Dave 0 #4 Posted January 28, 2010 TOM B: Does the bearing assy look like this one? http://cgi.ebay.com/Mower-Deck-Spindle-Bea...=item439b5aa566 My father in law (deceased) has a 36" side discharge for his 1974 B-100 that uses these and he used to cuss Wheel Horse for not putting greasable bearings in the mower deck. Just curious where in Kansas you are from? The big storm that is coming tonight and tomorrow is supposed to miss us. Dave
rickv1957 74 #5 Posted January 29, 2010 The early 70s 48" deck did not have grease fittings,I have seen the spindle housings drilled and tapped for zerk,Rick
tbbahner 28 #6 Posted January 29, 2010 Thanks for all the comments. Finally got everything derusted and the bearings pulled out. Made a trip to Industrial Bearing and they matched them up. Will post the numbers when they come in. Dave, I'm out here in Rossville, about 25 min. West of Topeka off Hwy 24. I see you're in Olathe. No, the shaft in the deck is a straight shaft, about 5" long or so. I kind of agree with your dad-in-law, decks are not one of WH strong points. If its gonna snow, it might as well dump. rickv1957 74 #7 Posted January 30, 2010 Snow here in Mo also,Rick
Tankman 3,523 #8 Posted July 20, 2012 Same mower deck, same problem. I looked everywhere for the grease fittings, duh. When lookin' had a clue, no lightning holes for the grease gun topside. No grease fittings on the underside like the MTD larger decks. Guess I'll drill 'n tap for my own grease fittings. The wheels have grease fittings ( )?
