Starting B80 Restoration

Hello, I am thinking about starting a complete restoration on my B80 that currently looks like a john deere

So, for those of you who have used the Valspar paint, what exactly is the difference in the restoration series and just the regular implement&tractor paint?

Other than the price difference.

I am planning on using IH Red and spraying the little parts and brush painting the hood, fender, frame, and other large parts.

For those who have used the gallon of paint, roughly how much did it cover and how well?

There is a ton of threads (arguments?) about the two types of Valspar.

I have used both, and from a rattle can and a paint gun. In my opinion, the "Restoration Series" paint goes on a lot smoother and ends up a lot glossier.

If you are going to use a gun, both types have their own hardeners. I use the hardener if I'm going to use a gun. The hardener makes it dry quicker as well as toughening it up.

I guess you mean the quart can when you say gallon? IIRC you will use less than a quart on a tractor.

I may use a gun, never have so I dont know much about them. Can u just buy a quart and use that or do you have to thin it out. and add stuff? Im clueless.

TSC has the thinner and the hardener. Mix it up as per the instructions on the can and have at it!

Hey JD and good luck with the restore. One thought about the painting and that is using a primer. There was a thread here where someone used a red primer with would help disguise small scratches. Can't remember who it was.....maybe they'll check in.

Now you've got me doubting my memory!!

I'm pretty sure I used less than a quart on the last one I did, however it was an early Lawn Ranger which doesnt have as much sheet metal as a B-80.

Also a lot of the small bits (pedals, steering column, tie rods etc) I sprayed with a rattle can as soon as I got them ready. I hate having a big pile of bits lying around, so I'd rattlecan the little bits so I could put them on the tractor straight away. Clean up with a spray gun is a bit of a chore, so I only used the gun for the big bits.

I really wanted to be sure the hood, gas tank and beltguard matched, so I painted them all at the same time, I think I only put 3 coats on the top sides and 2 on the bottoms.

I painted 2 complete tractors with a gallon of valspar resto. paint thined to spec, and sprayed, and that was every nut, bolt, clip, engine parts, ect........inside and out. Good luck

And then when i get a sprayer I will do the hood, fenders and other large parts. I really want to just brush paint it, is that possible with enamel? I know someone who painted their engine bay on their truck like that and it looked decent.

You're better off spraying than brushing ... my two cents worth.

Well youll just have to wait my friend. I havent even gotten any paint or even started tearing down. I hate to get everyones hopes up, but i may start this and it may be too much work for me.

if you want to brush it on ,from my limited expience the enamels dont brush well,i did my wagon and was not happy with how it laid down,i would use something that dries slower so it can flatten out,and put it on light so it wont run,maybe there is some enamel paint that u can brush but hopefully someone else could chime in.

Exactly, and the main reason I'm not starting yet is because I use the tractor to plow snow, so I have to have it together and running. Im getting some rattle cans this weekend to do the PTO pully, and related parts, and maybe some of the accessible parts right now. Thats all for right now. I might get a start on sanding down the hood this weekend though.
