Hitches, discs, plows, harrows, tillers

Recommended Posts

Ok I know I'm going to take some flak for this one but, do you guys know what discs, plows, harrows, and cultivators are used for? I mean I know they are used for gardening/preparing a garden but which one do you use for what, and when, doesn't a tiller do what all of these do? With the 300,400,500 series tractors what hitch do you use and with what attachments, for what? I know if any one can answer these questions its you guys. Any pictures or videos you guys might have would help me greatly to understand this whole thing a little better. :banghead:

Having not lived on a farm, but always having a garden as a kid, here is what I know.

The plow is for opening and turning the soil.

The disc is for breaking up the soil turned by the plow.

The harrow turns the broken soil into finer material.

The cultivator, depending on what type, is used for planting and managing the soil after the crops come in.

A roto-tiller is an all purpose device designed to accomplish many of the above tasks all at one time in a small garden or area that is not accessible with larger equipment.

However, a walk-behind tiller is a device designed to hurt your back, rip your shoulders out of their sockets, and generally make your wish you had stock in Advil.

Obviously you never had a Troy-Bilt Horse roto-tiller. :banghead: I do my garden walking along side it using one hand...turning her at the end of the row does take some effort

Maybe in previously worked soil, but not "virgin" ground.

I have a big Sears rear tine tiller (complete with wheel and front counterweights) and it doesn't like breaking new ground at all. Once it's in good ground, it's easier to handle than my Bulldog on his leash. :WRS:

I used my father-in-laws Troy-Built in my yard to make a 1st time garden in this area. The thing jumped up out of the dirt and the handles hit me on the shoulders, and just about knocked me down to the ground. I swore off of that dangerous thing!

You had it set too deep, in hard soil they will get up and walk on the tines. They can be as mean as a bull or gentle as a kitten. It just take a little get use to. I also have a 29 HP John Deere tractor with all the equipment for gardening. It's still easer to use the tiller to cultivate then to put them on the tractor.

well do any of you know which attachments work with lets say, the clevis hitch or the slot hitch. I'm guessing when you get to the end of your garden you have to raise the attachment. Someone has got to have some pictures of these set ups. It would be cool if someone could make a video of this whole process and post it on here. I already checked the photos posted in the implement section and they don't seem to show the actual set up.

Actually I did. You are correct. You could till with one hand and drink coffee with the other.

IF your wanting WH attachments, made specifically for the WH...youll be needing a slot hitch. If your looking for aftermarket stuff, thats still being made, Plows, Disc's, harrows, Etc etc your gonna need a clevis Hitch... If you buy one hitch and need the other you can always make an adapter.

Has anybody used the wheel horse toolbar set up? I have one but have never used it yet. It is a bar that mounts to the clevis hitch and you change the implements on the bar to what is needed at the time of use it comes with a disc, plow and cultivator.
