Ken B 3,189 #1 Posted January 20, 2010 I might be picking one of these tractors up. The 16 hp Briggs is said to be a little tired. Is this motor worth rebuilding (expensive parts I'm sure) or should I just scrap it and Kohlerize it? The machine is very clean, are the Briggs 16's a nice motor when all is well? I've known about this machine for a long time, its about time to pull the trigger. Thanks for any thoughts.
TT-(Moderator) 1,162 #2 Posted January 20, 2010 I doubt that parts are expensive --if you can actually find them. I never really looked up parts prices on these engines, but I have heard that the parts inventory is all but depleted. Kohler re-powering is a great idea, but when the opposed twin in my GT-1848 craps out, it'll be getting a B&S Vanguard V twin.
Horse Fanatic 51 #3 Posted January 20, 2010 Those engines were used on other tractors as well and used ones are not that hard to find and can be inexpensive.

KB9LOR 4 #6 Posted January 20, 2010 If you can get it for a good price, by all means go get it! I have one, just got through with a tranny swap last weekend, still have work to do on it.
tbbahner 28 #7 Posted January 20, 2010 They're nice tractors. Briggs are a little cheaper to repair than Kohlers. I uses after market parts and have had any problems. Might just need a new set of rings. Not hard to do. Tom B
mowerman1193 42 #8 Posted January 22, 2010 Last time I was on small engine warehouse site they had several lower hour motors like these use from military generators ( I think ).. They had what I thought was a fair price on a low hour motor..Just thought I would let you know if you go for the tractor.. I have one of these tractors that my dad bought new..I still have all the recieps and paper work..We worked this thing hard for a lot of years..I took it apart for a light restore but its been apart now for a couple years..Motor still ran good last time it has ran..Has to have a lot of hours on it as when i was a kid I used to mow our 2 acres plus a lot of times 2 nieghbors yard as well as plow drives with it in the winter..
