Kohler 10hp. Noise.

Hi, I have a 1982 C-105 that makes a mechanical rattly sound though its not that loud.

The engine starts and runs great and is well serviced though is just a bit noisy.

I have heard some people say the balance gears can exit the block, though I assumed this was on older engines with the older type of balance gears.

I looked through some of the other engine noise threads and still think its the gears.

Is this a common feature of these engines or should I be concerned.

All reassurance gratefully received!

There are several things that can make a little noise,piston getting worn,valve adjustment and ignition timing are a few,Rick

Yea Buckrancher is right K241 engines did not have balance gears.Like Rick said check your valve train. Lifters are adjustable and do need attention over time.

K241 engines did not have balance gears.

Actually there were some K241 engines equipped with balance gears.

They're found mainly on JD tractors, but you can't rule out one finding it's way to another machine.

Along with valve clearance and ignition timing, look at the rubber engine mounts. It might be something on the outside that's rattling. :thumbs:

Thanks for the replies.

As far as I know the engine is original so hopefully no balance gears.

I will check the valve clearances and the the points gap.

The noise goes away when the engine is under load. I have looked at the engine mounts as I thought the problem could be with them. I will have a closer look as the noise could be resonating up through the engine. Though at 28 years of age it might just be piston slap!

I've seen K241 engines with balance gears and without. The Cub Cadet version had a shallow cast aluminum oil pan without balance gears. The deep pans Wheel Horse used I thought all had balance gears but I could be wrong. I chased a noise on a K301 fresh rebuild and it ended up being the needle bearings in the counter-balance gears. It was a constant nasty noise on the flywheel side regardless of rpm, load etc. After fixing that the engine still had a light ticking / knock type noise that sounded like the flywheel side. All things were to spec., new crank grind, bore, etc. etc. The noise was only at mid throttle no load conditions. Full load flat out it was quiet as a church mouse. The add insult to injury, I rebuilt a K181 on a nice little Commando 800 and it has the same noise at part throttle, no load :thumbs: I backed the timing off thinking it might be spark knock but that doesn't seem to do anything other than make it run backward when you shut it off. I'm in the process of rebuilding another K301 that was whisper quiet but burned oil. If it knocks when I'm done I'm going to pull my hair out, what's left of it. :banghead:
