TT-(Moderator) 1,162 #26 Posted January 17, 2010 Is there a "keeper" then that may be missing that doesn't allow the shaft much forward movement? No. It could have the wrong armature or the wrong drive (or both) though.

Thanks Your 312 should have an M12 Magnum Kohler and the starter is different. If the "10hp" starter is off of a K241 engine and has the same tooth count on the drive gear and is a high mount starter it will work.

Shuboxlover 481 #30 Posted January 18, 2010 This may be a stupid question Could I slot the mounting holes in my starter housing to slide it back even a 1/4" or so?
Shuboxlover 481 #31 Posted January 19, 2010 ANYONE???? SLOTTED HOLES????? ANYONE????
Don1977 605 #32 Posted January 19, 2010 I don't think slotting it is a good idea. There has to be something wore out, or missing, or out of place in that starter.
dclarke 4,082 #33 Posted January 19, 2010 just a thought, have you oiled the splines of the armature shaft so the drive moves freely on the shaft? i have seen those splines too dirty or even worn enough that the drive doesn't go back all the way.

Shuboxlover 481 #35 Posted January 21, 2010 HOORAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Got my starter fixed. turns out there is a "keeper" (between the "front cap" of the starter and the armature) inside the starter that slid down the shaft which was causing the play I was seeing. But well see how long it last, since it happened once, something tells me it's gonna happen again...but maybe not
