Klinking Starter gear on K341s

Recommended Posts

So the clinking I heard when the motor was running is confirmed to be the starter gear. I could see it clinking against the flywheel after I took the shroud off and started the thing. The spring at the end of the starter shaft seems to be o.k......but the whole entire shaft is pushing out of the starter body, thus resulting in the starter gear rubbing against the flywheel.

What do you think is causing this, and how should I fix it?

Thanks

First thing I would do is lube the shaft onthe starter. Sounds like it is dry and not able to return. You can use wd or lith grease. Keep us informed.

I can push on the end of the shaft (the nut by the gear) and the whole shaft and all goes in, but then springs right back out.

To be honest with you I've never had to take the starter apart on My 75 C-160. Just put some graphite on it once.

Take a look at pages 92-93 in the repair manual. Figure 8-29 should be the one on yours.

I sounds to me like the spring could be week or possibly be on the wrong side of the drive pinion  If you can "push in on it and it pops back out" without seeing it, is leading me to think the PO may have replaced it, and has it between the starter and the gear. It should be between the nut and the pinion gear as shown in Fig 8-29 of the repair manual. That would push the pinion gear away from the flywheel after it starts.

Keep us posted.
